IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the process of how ethanol is manufacture. The main required components are tractors for harvesting and several machineries.

Overall, it is natural cycling process with manifold stages. it starts with harvesting the plants using appropriate tractors and ends with producing ethanol. Furthermore, many transportation such as cargos, cars, and trucks can produce carbon dioxide to regenerate the plants and trees.

In term of the process, harvesting the plants and trees using modern machineries, than after the harvested items can be done with pre-processing to produce cellulose, Apart from that the cellulose can be Processing into small particles called Sugars.

it can be clearly seen seen, in the sugar the small microbes were added to make ethanol, Moreover many transportation carriers such as cars, trucks, and airplanes generate carbon dioxide, which can assist to grow again plants and trees using appropriate energy such as sunlight and carbon dioxide.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response provides a basic overview of the ethanol production process, but it lacks the necessary detail required for a high band score. While the main stages are mentioned, the description of the process is fragmented and misses key technical steps shown in the diagram, such as the specific conversion of cellulose to sugar or the fermentation stage. The overview is somewhat vague, and the inclusion of external information about transportation and carbon dioxide, which is not the primary focus of the production cycle, detracts from the summary. To improve, focus strictly on the steps provided in the diagram and ensure all key stages are clearly sequenced.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate, such as 'In term of the process' and 'than after the harvested items'. The progression of ideas is sometimes disjointed, particularly in the transition between the production process and the environmental cycle. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words that connect the stages of the process more logically. Improving the transition between the technical steps would significantly enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision needed for a higher score. There are several instances of word-choice errors, such as 'manufacture' instead of 'manufactured' and 'machineries' (machinery is an uncountable noun). The repetition of words like 'plants and trees' and 'transportation' limits the range. While the student attempts to use technical terms like 'cellulose' and 'microbes', the overall lexical control is inconsistent. To reach a higher band, focus on using uncountable nouns correctly and expanding your vocabulary to include more precise verbs and nouns related to industrial processes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('many transportation... can produce'), incorrect verb forms ('is manufacture'), and punctuation errors, such as the comma splice in 'it can be clearly seen seen, in the sugar the small microbes were added'. The misuse of articles and pluralisation of uncountable nouns is a recurring issue. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for common grammatical slips would be beneficial.
