IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The diagram below illustrates, the production of biofuel named ethanol.

Overall, the process is a linear process which involves different stages that begins with growing plants and trees and culminates with the production of ethanol which can be used in various vehicles .

Initially, the large number of trees and plants are grown which uses sunlight and carbon dioxide as a source of energy for their proper growth. After that, plants and trees are carried in a lorry by farmer to begin the harvesting procedure , prior to undergoing the pre-processing which results in the formation of cellulose .

In subsequent stages, the ready cellulose sent to the laboratory where it is converted into sugar with the help of different chemical procedures. Finally, microbes are added to the sugar which in turn form ethanol and can be used for the different kinds of vehicles such as car, truck, planes. All these vehicles emit carbon dioxide which can be used again as a form of energy by trees and plants to repeat the process.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully identifies the main features of the ethanol production process. You have provided a clear overview and followed the sequence of stages from plant growth to the final usage in vehicles. However, the description of the process could be more precise. For instance, you mention 'ready cellulose' being sent to the laboratory, but the diagram indicates a specific 'cellulose' stage followed by 'fermentation'. To reach a higher band, ensure you explicitly mention all key stages shown in the diagram, such as 'fermentation' and 'distillation', rather than grouping them under general terms like 'chemical procedures'. The inclusion of the cycle back to carbon dioxide is a good observation of the overall process.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organised, moving chronologically through the stages of the diagram. You use transition signals such as 'Initially', 'After that', 'In subsequent stages', and 'Finally' to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used to separate the introduction/overview from the body of the process. While the flow is generally smooth, some cohesive devices feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary the sentence structure and use more sophisticated referencing to link the stages, rather than relying solely on time-based connectors. Overall, the information is easy to follow and the progression is clear.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'culminates', 'harvesting', 'cellulose', and 'microbes'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'large number of trees and plants are grown' (which is slightly unnatural) and 'ready cellulose sent' (missing the verb 'is'). You also repeat 'vehicles' and 'process' several times. To improve, try to use synonyms or more precise technical vocabulary related to industrial processes. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, but lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as the unnecessary comma in the first sentence ('illustrates, the production'), missing articles ('in a lorry by farmer'), and subject-verb agreement issues ('trees and plants are grown which uses'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more error-free sentences and ensure consistent control over punctuation and articles. Your attempt at complex sentences is good, but they need to be more accurately constructed.
