The diagram below shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The diagram illustrates the process off how ethanol produced by the help of suger cane .

Lokking from an over all point of view, it is a multistages process beginning with the growing of plants and tree and the final step is making ethanol.

To be specific, the most strking feature of the graph is the harvesting of plants which preceded by the growing of plants with the help of sunlight and carbon dioxide after that the raw material crushed by the help of pre processing and extrect the cellulose to the suger cane .

Furthermore, in lab processing the cellulose and make sugars and add some mcrobes which help to make ethanol which is mixed with petrol and use as a fule in cars, truck, aeroplanes which produce carbone dioxide energy resource of plants.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the task achievement score. While the student attempts to describe the stages of ethanol production, the summary is underdeveloped and lacks the necessary detail to fully explain the process. Key stages, such as the specific chemical conversion or the role of the fermentation tank, are either omitted or described in a confusing manner. The response does not clearly highlight the main features or make effective comparisons, resulting in a fragmented overview of the diagram.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay lacks a clear logical progression. While there is an attempt at paragraphing, the sentences are poorly connected, and the use of cohesive devices is mechanical and often inaccurate. For example, the transition 'To be specific' does not effectively introduce the detailed stages, and the final paragraph is a run-on sentence that makes it difficult to follow the sequence of events. The lack of clear signposting between the stages of the process hinders the overall flow of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and contains frequent errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'suger cane', 'Lokking', 'strking', 'extrect', and 'fule'. These errors, combined with the repetitive use of 'help of', indicate a restricted range of vocabulary. The student struggles to use precise terminology related to industrial processes, which is essential for an Academic Task 1 response. The language used is often informal and lacks the academic tone required for this task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that impede communication. There are significant issues with sentence structure, such as the opening sentence 'The diagram illustrates the process off how ethanol produced by the help of suger cane', which lacks a verb. Punctuation is also problematic, with run-on sentences and missing commas. The student relies on simple sentence structures, and attempts at more complex sentences are consistently marred by errors in subject-verb agreement and preposition usage, such as 'which preceded by the growing of plants'.
