IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The diagram illustrates the cyclical process through which ethanol biofuel is produced from plants and trees through several stages.

Overall, the production of ethanol biofuel is based on several steps like harvesting, convert it into cellulose etc. Greenhouse gases and sun light play vital role in the production of ethanol biofuel.

That fuel is used in our vehicles to accelerate them to cover long distances and there are also so many significant use of it.

The primary step for the production of ethanol biofuel is to grow the plants and trees and then able to be harvesting them. The harvested material then steps on which is pre-processing and then convert that pre-processed material into cellulose from which chemist do so many processes to make sugars and then microbes added into the produced sugar and like this ethanol biofuel get ready to use.

After the production of the ethanol biofuel, producers transferred that fuel for vehicles into the fuel agencies from where people bring that fuel for their vehicles and used it to accelerate them.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the task by summarizing the main features of the ethanol production process. However, it lacks clarity in the sequence of steps and includes some irrelevant details, such as the impact of greenhouse gases. A clearer structure and better focus on key features would enhance the overall response. Additionally, the conclusion could better summarize the main points of the process instead of focusing on the final use of ethanol in vehicles.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The coherence of the response is somewhat affected by a lack of logical flow in transitioning between the steps of the ethanol production process. While the introduction sets a basic context, the details could be better organized to ensure each stage is clearly connected to the last. Additionally, some phrases, such as "that fuel is used in our vehicles," feel out of place. Overall, clarity and logical connections between points require improvement for higher coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The lexical resource shows some satisfactory vocabulary related to the topic, such as "biofuel," "harvesting," and "microbes." However, the use of phrases such as "so many significant use" is awkward and suggests limited range. More varied vocabulary and precise word choices could enhance the response, such as using "numerous applications" instead. The response lacks the complexity expected at a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

Grammatical range and accuracy are impacted by several issues with sentence structure and verb forms. Sentences like "the harvested material then steps on which is pre-processing" are unclear and grammatically incorrect. Additionally, issues with subject-verb agreement, such as in "there are also so many significant use," need to be addressed. While there are attempts at complex structures, more accuracy and clarity would be necessary for a higher score.

Overall feedback

The response provides a basic overview of the biofuel production process but lacks clarity and organization, which diminishes its effectiveness. To improve, focus on outlining the steps in a more structured manner, ensuring a logical flow from one stage to the next. Additionally, enhance your vocabulary choice for precision, and work on reducing grammatical errors, particularly in sentence construction. Practicing writing cohesive paragraphs and ensuring proper word usage will enhance both clarity and overall comprehension. Consider summarizing your main points more effectively to reinforce the description of the process.
