IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The provide diagram illustrates the cyclical process of producess of producing ethanol, a type of biofuel , from plants and trees, as well as its environmental impact.

Overall, ethanol production is a multi-stage process that transitions from biological growth to industries processing and consumer use. Crucially, the process functions as a continuous loop, the process functions as a continuous loop, where the carbon dioxide released during production and consumption is absorbed back into the system by growing vegetation.

The cyclie begins with plants and trees growing by absorbing energy from sunlight and carbon this vegetation is harvested using specialized machinery and transported to an industrial facility for pre-processing.

In summery, in the subsequent processing phase, the cellulose is converted into sugars. Microbes are then added to these sugers to facilitate a fermentation process, which ultimate a fermentation process, which ultimately produces ethanol. The finished biofuel is then utilized to power transport vehiclrs, such as truck and cars. This combustion releases carbon dioxed back into the atmosphere, which is then reabsorbed by plants and trees, effectively restarting the cycle.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully identifies the main features of the ethanol production cycle. You have clearly outlined the stages from biological growth to industrial processing and final consumption. The overview is effective in highlighting the cyclical nature of the process. However, the response could be improved by providing more specific detail on the 'pre-processing' stage or the specific inputs mentioned in the diagram (such as the role of cellulose). While you have covered the main points, a slightly more detailed description of the transition between stages would elevate the response. Overall, the task is addressed well, and the key information is presented in a logical manner.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'In summary' and 'subsequently' to guide the reader. However, there are instances of repetition that disrupt the flow, such as the phrase 'the process functions as a continuous loop' which appears twice in the same sentence. Additionally, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is slightly abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing is precise would help to achieve a higher band score. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the stages of the process.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'biofuel', 'fermentation', and 'cellulose' correctly. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'producess', 'cyclie', 'summery', 'sugers', 'vehiclrs', and 'dioxed'. These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable, although they do not significantly impede communication. To improve, focus on proofreading for common spelling mistakes. Using more precise collocations, such as 'industrial processing' instead of 'industries processing', would also enhance the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you successfully use complex sentences to explain the cycle, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'The provide diagram' (should be 'provided') and 'ultimately a fermentation process, which ultimately produces' (a repetitive, fragmented clause). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are missing spaces after commas in some places. The majority of your sentences are clear, but the frequency of minor grammatical errors prevents a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and avoiding repetitive phrasing within sentences will help improve accuracy.
