The diagram below shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 4.0)

This diagram illustrates that how we can produce the biofuel with many step which is called ethanol.

First we can use the carbon dioxide and sunlight for plants grow after that we can harvest all these plants and we can produce the cellulose with the step of the pre-process then process with the chemicals and we can produce the sugars and then we ultimately used the sugars and make the microbes and then we can produces the ethanol. We can see that with the different process and then we can make the ethanol then we can sell the ethanol in so many vehicles. W e can see that how we can get the natural things after that we can be able to produce the ethanol with the help of the some steps. Then we will use this ethanol after produce the carbon dioxide which will be useful for the plants. So we produce the ethanol with the help of different steps.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response attempts to describe the process, but it fails to provide a clear overview or highlight the main features of the diagram. The description is repetitive and lacks the analytical tone required for an Academic Task 1 report. Key stages, such as the specific chemical treatment or the conversion of sugars, are described in a very simplistic and vague manner. The response does not effectively compare the stages or explain the cyclical nature of the process clearly. To improve, you should group the steps logically and focus on describing the transformation of materials rather than simply listing actions in a narrative style.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0

The response lacks paragraphing, which is essential for a structured report. The flow of ideas is repetitive, relying heavily on basic connectors like 'then' and 'after that' to link sentences. This makes the text feel like a list of actions rather than a cohesive summary. There is no clear logical progression; the information is presented in a somewhat disjointed manner. To improve, you should organize your report into clear paragraphs: an introduction, an overview of the process, and one or two body paragraphs detailing the specific stages.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.0

The vocabulary is very limited and repetitive. You frequently use basic verbs like 'produce', 'make', and 'use', which does not demonstrate the range required for a higher band score. There is a lack of technical or process-related vocabulary (e.g., 'fermentation', 'distillation', 'raw materials', 'by-product'). Phrases like 'natural things' are too vague for an academic context. To improve, try to incorporate more precise terminology related to industrial processes and avoid repeating the same verbs throughout the text.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('we can produces the ethanol'), word order ('illustrates that how we can'), and sentence structure. Many sentences are run-on or lack proper punctuation, which makes the text difficult to follow. The range of structures is very limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring that subjects and verbs agree, and using more complex sentence structures such as passive voice, which is highly appropriate for describing industrial processes.
