The diagram below shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The image shows the process in which its proved that how a biofuel: ethanol is made.
Overall the process starts from natural things like plants or trees.
So the plants and trees are harvested when they get prepared and are brought to the pre processing industry to turn into material named Cellulose. And those are than processed using laboratory stuff like chemicals and etc.
After that they're turned into substance named sugar and then some chemical substance is added to them named microbes that get mixed with sugars and an Ethanol is formed though and is used in different vehicles like cars and trucks also in plane.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the score. The summary is very brief and lacks the necessary detail to fully describe the stages of the ethanol production process. While the main steps are mentioned, they are under-developed and lack the analytical depth required for an Academic Task 1 response. There is no clear overview of the process, and the description of the stages is overly simplistic. To improve, you must expand on each stage of the diagram, provide a clear summary of the overall process, and ensure the response meets the length requirement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response lacks a clear structure and paragraphing. The ideas are presented in a single, short block of text, which makes the progression of the process difficult to follow. There is a lack of cohesive devices to link the stages of the process logically. Phrases like 'After that' are used, but the overall flow is disjointed. To improve, you should organize your response into distinct paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing the specific stages of the process. Use a wider range of linking words such as 'subsequently', 'following this', and 'as a result' to improve the logical flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite basic and repetitive. Phrases like 'natural things', 'laboratory stuff', and 'chemicals and etc.' are imprecise and informal for an academic report. The use of 'etc.' is inappropriate in this context. There is little attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary related to industrial processes or chemical production. To improve, focus on using more precise terminology, such as 'raw materials', 'fermentation', 'distillation', and 'by-products'. Avoid informal fillers and vague descriptors to ensure your writing maintains an academic tone.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains several grammatical errors, including issues with article usage ('an Ethanol'), subject-verb agreement, and sentence structure. The phrasing 'its proved that how a biofuel' is awkward and grammatically incorrect. The sentences are mostly simple, with little evidence of complex structures. Punctuation is also inconsistent. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction and proofreading for common errors like missing articles or incorrect verb forms. Incorporate a variety of sentence types, including passive voice, which is essential for describing industrial processes.
