IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram illustrate the production of biofuel in different stages and we called this fuel ethanol. Overall, we are going to discuss the main data by choosing and reporting the main highlights and make comparisons if possible.
Looking at the first, the production start from the stage one where plants and trees grow with the help of sunlight and carbon dioxide and harvesting process is start. After that its Pre-processing in machines and make its in the form of cellulose and processing start in factories. Furthermore, factories convert these cellulose in sugars and microbes added its in to purify the ethanol.
In the end, ethanol supplies in different transporting vehicles, driving cars and as well as in aeroplanes. These vehicles release carbon dioxide from their engines that again mix in air and plants and trees grown with these gases. This is the loop that is helping organizations and companies to reproduction of biofuel for human endeavour.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main stages of the process, but the overview is ineffective. Instead of summarizing the key features of the ethanol production cycle, the introduction merely repeats the task instructions ('we are going to discuss the main data'). Furthermore, the description of the process is somewhat superficial. For example, the transition from 'cellulose' to 'sugars' and the role of 'microbes' are mentioned, but the explanation lacks the necessary detail to fully convey the technical nature of the diagram. To improve, you should provide a clear, concise summary of the overall process in the introduction and ensure each stage is described with greater precision.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into three paragraphs, which is a logical structure for a process description. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. Phrases like 'Looking at the first' and 'In the end' are somewhat unnatural in an academic context. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear; for instance, the phrase 'this is the loop' is a good attempt at summarizing the cycle, but the connection between the sentences could be smoother. Improving the variety and accuracy of linking words will help the flow of your writing significantly.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for a higher band. There are several instances of awkward word choice and grammatical collocation errors, such as 'reproduction of biofuel' (instead of 'production') and 'make its in the form of' (instead of 'convert it into'). The range of vocabulary is limited, relying on basic verbs like 'start' and 'make'. To achieve a higher score, you should incorporate more specific terminology related to industrial processes and ensure that word forms are used correctly in context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the reader's understanding. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement ('the production start', 'plants and trees grown'), article usage, and sentence structure ('we called this fuel ethanol'). While there is an attempt to use complex sentences, these are often marred by errors, such as 'factories convert these cellulose in sugars and microbes added its in to purify'. You need to focus on basic grammatical accuracy, particularly verb tenses and prepositions, before attempting more complex structures.
