IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The rendered process chart display information about the production of biofuel namely ethanol.

Looking into the given details , Plants and trees are grown by sunlight , carbon dioxide and water . After growing plants and trees , harvesting of plants is done by tractor . Then, pre processing is started and cellulose is ready for processing as . Apart from this the sugar is become as well as microbes are also added for producing of ethanol.

Probing further , after production of biofuel , it is used in transportation such as cars , trucks , and air planes and these transports are spread carbon dioxide . In addition , This process is running continously again and again which is important .

Overall , it is noticeable that there are many steps of production of biofuel which starts with harvesting of plants and trees and ends with adding microbes .

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers the main stages of the ethanol production process, from the growth of plants to the final usage in transportation. However, the description is somewhat superficial and lacks the necessary detail to fully explain the process. For instance, the transition from 'pre-processing' to 'cellulose' and the subsequent addition of sugar and microbes is described in a way that is difficult to follow and lacks technical accuracy. The summary of the diagram is present, but the key features are not highlighted with sufficient clarity or precision to reach a higher band. The overview provided at the end is a bit repetitive and does not effectively synthesize the main trends or stages of the process.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or awkward, such as 'Probing further' and 'Apart from this'. The logical progression between sentences is sometimes interrupted by unclear phrasing, such as 'sugar is become as well as microbes are also added'. While there is an attempt to use linking words, the flow is often disjointed, and the referencing (e.g., 'these transports') is not always precise. The paragraphing is present, but the internal structure of the paragraphs lacks the sophistication required for a higher score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and often repetitive. There are several instances of awkward word choices and incorrect collocations, such as 'sugar is become' and 'these transports are spread carbon dioxide'. The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey the basic meaning, but it lacks the precision and flexibility needed to describe a technical process effectively. Some terms are used incorrectly, which occasionally forces the reader to re-read to understand the intended meaning. To improve, you should focus on using more precise terminology related to industrial processes and ensuring that word forms are used correctly in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response relies heavily on simple sentence structures. While there are attempts at complex sentences, they are often marred by grammatical errors, such as 'the sugar is become as well as microbes are also added for producing of ethanol'. Punctuation is inconsistent, particularly with the placement of commas. There are frequent errors in verb tense and article usage, such as 'the production of biofuel namely ethanol' and 'these transports are spread carbon dioxide'. These errors are noticeable and occasionally impede the clarity of the message. A greater focus on sentence variety and proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy is needed.
