IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Writing task-1

The given diagram illustrate the process of biofuel how biofuel named ethanal is produced

From diagram given , The First step is the energy in which is sunlight + carbon dioxide helps to the second step to grow Plants and tress after the of help First step to second step , Harvesting takes place it done throught help of treactors and other equipments , Then it is transported to pre-processing stage with the help of pre-processing cellulose is extracted from other substances . Further cellulose is sand to factor for chemical process in which sugars is moved out from other substances .

Sugars are removed from all other objects because it is main ingridents for making ethanal after it is done , Microbes a living organism is added with sugar to Make the final object which is Ethanal. Ethanal is used in many transport vichiches such as cars , truck and aeroplanes , This vielicales produce carbon dioxide which again used in First stage of this process.

overall , The process of producing is never ending because with carbon dioxide and sunlight the First Stage Starts and at last Stage is produced by viehicales .

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main stages of the ethanol production process, from the initial growth of plants to the final usage in vehicles. However, the description is somewhat simplistic and lacks a clear, professional overview of the cycle. While the main features are identified, the explanation of the chemical and mechanical processes is quite basic, and the connection between the stages could be more precisely described. The summary of the cycle is present, but it lacks the analytical depth required for a higher band score. The response successfully identifies the cyclical nature of the process, which is a key feature of the diagram.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of the process. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'Then' and 'Further'. There are also issues with sentence structure and punctuation, which occasionally disrupt the flow of ideas. For example, the transition between the harvesting stage and the pre-processing stage is somewhat abrupt. While there is an overall logical sequence, the lack of sophisticated linking words and the inconsistent use of punctuation make the progression feel less fluid than required for a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but remains quite limited and repetitive. There are several spelling errors, such as 'ethanal' (instead of ethanol), 'treactors' (tractors), 'vichiches' (vehicles), and 'ingridents' (ingredients). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable. The range of vocabulary is restricted to basic terms, and there is little attempt to use more precise or academic language to describe the industrial processes shown in the diagram. To improve, you should focus on learning topic-specific vocabulary related to manufacturing and chemical processes and pay closer attention to spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response relies heavily on simple sentence structures, and there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Issues include incorrect verb forms ('The given diagram illustrate'), missing articles ('The First step is the energy'), and awkward phrasing ('with the help of pre-processing cellulose is extracted'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with many sentences lacking proper terminal marks or using commas incorrectly. While the meaning is generally clear, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar and sentence construction prevents the response from reaching a higher band. You should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles.
