IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given diagram illustrates the process of producing ethanol, a type of biofuel.
To begin with, plants and trees grow by farmers then using energy from sunlight and carbon dioxide. Furthermore, once they have matured, farmers was harvested by sickles then there were transported by tractor. After harvested plant using machinery. The harvested material then undergoes pre-processing, during which it is converted into small pieces such as cellulose.
However, the cellulose is sent to the chemical laboratory then their were testing and processing of cellulose, where it is broken down into sugar particles. Moreover, microbes are then added to these sugars, after resulting in the production of ethanol. In addition, the finished ethanol is used as fuel for different forms of transport, including cars, trucks and Aeroplan's.
Finally these vehicles release different types of gases like carbon dioxide when the fuel is used. The carbon dioxide returns to the atmosphere and is absorbed by growing plants and trees, allowing the cycle to begin again.
Overall, it is a cyclical process consisting of several stages, beginning with the growth of plants and trees and endings with the release of carbon dioxide from vehicles. this carbon dioxide is then reused by plants, completing the cycles.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all stages of the process, from the growth of plants to the release of carbon dioxide. The main features are identified, and the cyclical nature of the process is highlighted in the conclusion. However, the description of the process is occasionally inaccurate due to grammatical interference, such as stating 'farmers was harvested' instead of describing the harvesting process itself. While the overview is present, the reporting of the steps could be more precise to better reflect the technical nature of the diagram. The response successfully addresses the requirements of the task by summarizing the provided information.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs detailing the process, and a summary. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', 'However', and 'Moreover' are used to link ideas. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'after resulting in the production'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, for example, 'their were testing' (referring to the laboratory) and 'completing the cycles' (plural used when referring to a single cycle). Despite these minor issues, the progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, covering technical terms like 'cellulose', 'microbes', and 'biofuel'. There are some errors in word choice and form, such as 'Aeroplan's' (incorrect pluralization and spelling) and 'farmers was harvested' (incorrect verb choice). The student attempts to use a range of vocabulary, but the inaccuracies in word formation and collocation prevent a higher score. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the quality of the writing. Passive voice is attempted but often misused, such as 'farmers was harvested' and 'their were testing'. There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and punctuation, such as 'endings with' and the incorrect use of the apostrophe in 'Aeroplan's'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable and suggest a lack of control over complex structures.
