Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The response attempts to summarize the diagram showing the production of ethanol, but it struggles significantly with accurate reporting and data selection. The student mentions key stages such as plants growing, harvesting, pre-processing, cellulose, processing, sugars, and adding microbes, but the description is fragmented, highly generalised, and contains confusing assertions like 'shipping carbaon dioxide'. Furthermore, the relationship between the steps is not clearly explained, leading to under-developed ideas. While there is an attempt to cover the entire process from sunlight to the final product, the lack of clarity and misinterpretation of the flow diagrams elements keep this response at a lower band. It meets the minimum length requirement, but the quality of information selection is weak.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The organization of the text is severely hindered by erratic paragraphing, poor sentence structure, and improper punctuation, such as spaces before full stops ('Additionally .'). While the writer attempts to use transitional phrases like 'Overall' and 'Furthermore', the overall logical progression is broken. Sentences often stand in isolation without clear cohesive ties, and referencing between ideas is frequently confusing or absent. There is an attempt to divide the text into an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs, but the poor control over cohesive devices and structural fragmentation results in a lack of overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is very basic, repetitive, and heavily flawed. The student misspells several key words, such as 'diagrma' instead of diagram, 'producation' instead of production, 'togather' instead of together, 'singal' instead of single, 'initall' instead of initial, and 'Ethnol' instead of ethanol. There are also awkward word choices and collocations throughout, such as 'joint venture of human and machine' and 'shipping carbaon dioxide'. The range of vocabulary is limited and strained, with frequent errors that cause severe strain on the reader and impede clear communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
Grammatical control is extremely weak throughout the response. The writer relies heavily on simple structures, and attempts at more complex sentences fail due to severe structural errors, incorrect verb forms, and missing verbs. Examples include 'The process is joint venture', 'all steps is very important with coneccted with each other', and 'the process start plants and grow and harvesting'. Punctuation is also misused with stray spaces and improper terminal marks. Errors are pervasive and constant, frequently distorting the meaning and making many sentences very difficult to comprehend.
