IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the process of producing a biofuel called ethanol.

Overall, the process consist of several stages, beginning with the growth and harvesting of plants and tree and ending with the production of ethanol. It is cyclic process, as carbon dioxide released by vehicle is absorbed by plants and tree, allowing cycle to begin again.

To begin with, plants and tree are grown and then harvested. The harvested material subsequently pre-processed using a machine, which produced cellulose. The cellulose is then transformed into chemical laboratory, where it is converted into sugar. Following the sugar is transformed into microbes, from which ethanol is produced.

In final stage, the ethanol can be used in various type of transport including cars, truck , and airplanes. These vehicle release carbon dioxide as waste product. The carbon dioxide is again absorbed by plants and trees as an energy source, which allowing to start whole process again.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main stages of the biofuel production cycle. An appropriate overview is provided in the second paragraph, capturing the cyclic nature of the process and the role of carbon dioxide. The sequential steps from growing plants and trees, harvesting, pre-processing, cellulose creation, processing into sugars, adding microbes, and finally generating ethanol and carbon dioxide are accurately reported. Key comparisons and the cyclical relationship are clearly identified. The content is fully grounded in the provided visual data, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs detailing the process steps, and a concluding overview of the cycle. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'subsequently', and 'In final stage' are used to sequence information. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the main process, and the conclusion. However, referencing and transitions could be slightly smoother to reach higher bands. Overall, the information flows reasonably well, aligning with a Band 6.5 descriptor.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for describing a scientific process, using terms like 'cyclic process', 'cellulose', 'microbes', and 'waste product'. There are, however, noticeable lexical and grammatical-number errors throughout the text, such as 'the process consist' instead of 'consists', missing plural forms ('plants and tree' instead of 'plants and trees'), and awkward phrasing like 'transformed into chemical laboratory'. These minor slips place the lexical control at a solid Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including passive voice constructions like 'is pre-processed' and 'is converted'. There are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as subject-verb agreement errors ('the process consist'), missing articles or plurals ('plants and tree', 'various type of transport'), and awkward transitions ('Following the sugar is transformed'). While these errors are frequent enough to prevent a higher score, they do not severely impede overall communication, making Band 6.0 the appropriate descriptor.
