IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 8.0)
The provided diagram illustrates the cyclical process by which a renewable biofuel known as ethanol is manufactured and consumed.
Overall, the production of ethanol is a continuous loop that combines biological growth, industrial processing, and fuel consumption. The entire procedure can be divided into three main stages: the cultivation and harvesting of raw materials, the chemical transformation into ethanol, and its utilization as a transportation fuel which naturally replenishes the carbon cycle.
The cycle commences when plants and trees grow by utilizing solar energy and absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Once mature, these plants are harvested using mechanical equipment such as tractors. The gathered biomass then undergoes a pre-processing stage to extract cellulose.
In the subsequent industrial phase, the extracted cellulose is sent to a processing facility where it is broken down and chemically converted into sugars. Following this, specific microbes are introduced to ferment the sugars, ultimately yielding ethanol.
In the final stage, the finished biofuel is distributed to power various modes of transportation, including cars, trucks, and airplanes. The combustion of ethanol in these vehicles releases carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere. This emission completes the closed-loop cycle, as the carbon dioxide is once again absorbed by growing plants and trees through photosynthesis.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The student covers all parts of the task well, providing a clear and comprehensive summary of the process diagram showing how ethanol is produced. The response accurately identifies the main features and stages of the cyclical process, from plant growth and harvesting to processing, microbe addition, and ultimate fuel consumption releasing carbon dioxide. The overview paragraph effectively highlights that the process is a continuous loop combining biological growth, industrial processing, and fuel consumption. All details reported are fully grounded in the provided visual data, with no invented information or misread stages. The progression of steps is logically traced and explained.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically sequenced and easy to follow, displaying a clear progression from the beginning to the end of the biofuel cycle. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct stages of the process, such as the initial growth and harvesting, the industrial conversion into sugars, and the final distribution and combustion. Cohesive devices such as 'Once mature', 'In the subsequent industrial phase', and 'In the final stage' are managed skillfully to guide the reader smoothly through the text without any mechanical feel. Referencing is consistently clear throughout the entire response.
Lexical Resource — Band 8.0
The student demonstrates a wide and appropriate lexical range suited to a process diagram. Uncommon items and subject-specific vocabulary such as 'cyclical process', 'biomass', 'pre-processing', 'cellulose', 'ferment', and 'closed-loop cycle' are used naturally and with a high degree of precision. Word choices and collocations are accurate, contributing to a formal and academic tone. There are no noticeable spelling or word-choice errors, demonstrating sophisticated control over vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The writer employs a wide range of complex sentence structures with a high degree of flexibility and grammatical control. Sentences such as 'The cycle commences when plants and trees grow by utilizing solar energy and absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere' showcase accurate subordinate clauses and participial phrases. The majority of sentences are completely error-free, and any complex structures attempted are handled successfully. Punctuation is used correctly throughout to structure the complex arguments and descriptions.
