IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The rendered diagram demonstrates a clear information about how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.
Initially, plants are grown and when are they develep into mature tree harvesting is done by farmers. At this stage crops are cutt into pieces via help of a machine and they become a cellulose, these substances are send to lab for doing chemical processing which then get converted into a sugars neurons.
Furthermore, neurons are developed into microbes which become ethanol. this substance is used in vehicles like cars, trucks as well as in aeroplane these machines release a gas called carbon dioxide in air. At last, carbon dioxide is absorbed by trees.
Overall, the whole process is so complicated and each and every steps is necessary to perform.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to describe the main stages of the biofuel production cycle, mentioning plant growth, harvesting, pre-processing into cellulose, chemical processing into sugars, adding microbes to produce ethanol, and the eventual release and reabsorption of carbon dioxide. However, the text suffers from several significant misreadings of the diagram, such as inventing 'neurons' and confusing the sequence of microbes and sugars. More importantly, the response falls well short of the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, containing only 122 words. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed, leading to a band score of 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The text is organized into four brief paragraphs, attempting an introduction, body stages, and an overall concluding thought. However, logical progression is frequently disrupted by confusing phrasing and mechanical cohesive devices like 'Initially', 'Furthermore', and 'At last', which are misused or linked to inaccurate descriptions of the process flow. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as 'these substances' and 'neurons'. Paragraphing is present, but overall cohesion is faulty and lacks clear overall progression, warranting a band 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and frequently inaccurate, demonstrating a limited range for this task type. There are noticeable word-choice errors and non-standard terms, such as 'develep', 'cutt', 'send' instead of 'sent', and the invention of the word 'neurons' to describe biological/chemical components in the process. While terms like 'harvesting', 'cellulose', 'microbes', and 'carbon dioxide' are present, the pervasive lexical inaccuracies cause significant difficulty and confusion for the reader, placing it at band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar and punctuation is weak throughout the text. There are frequent errors in verb forms and tense consistency, such as 'when are they develep', 'crops are cutt', 'are send', and run-on sentences like 'At this stage crops are cutt... and they become a cellulose, these substances are send...'. Punctuation is also neglected in places, such as missing capital letters after full stops ('At this stage...', 'Furthermore...', 'this substance...'). These frequent errors restrict the score to a band 5.0.
