IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The diagram illustrates the production of particular type of biofuel which is known as ethanol.

Overall, several important stages are involved in production of such product, started with carbon dioxide emitted by different types of vehicle and ended by adding microbes in laboratory.

It is clear that carbone dioxide which is excreted to atmosphere by cars and airplanes ised by plants in a partucular process known as photosynthesis which such gas and sunlight through chemical reaction provide energy required by plants to grow. As the plants and trees are grown, they will be harvested through specialized machines. The harvested plants then transported to manufacturer and undergo pre processing in which thy are grinded to smaller pieces known as cellulose.

After that cellulose underwent chemical processing and became suger . This takes place in labratories , as microbes added the final product of ethanol produced and then used for different kinds of engines.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to describe the process of ethanol production from plants, outlining key stages such as harvesting, pre-processing into cellulose, processing into sugars, and the addition of microbes. However, there are significant omissions and misinterpretations of the visual data. For instance, the overview incorrectly states that the process ends by adding microbes in a laboratory, whereas the diagram shows microbes being added as an intermediate step before ethanol is produced and eventually consumed by vehicles, which release carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere in a cyclical manner. Furthermore, the overall trend of a closed carbon-neutral cycle is not fully or accurately captured. Consequently, the response addresses the task only partially, leading to a band score of 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response attempts an overall structure with a brief introduction, body sentences, and an implied conclusion, but the progression is disjointed. The paragraphing is weak, with the entire body of the process crammed into a single dense block. Cohesive devices are basic and repetitive, utilizing words like 'Overall', 'It is clear that', 'After that', and 'This takes place'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the sentence 'in which thy are grinded to smaller pieces known as cellulose', where it misidentifies pre-processed material as cellulose directly. While there is a logical attempt to follow the sequence of the diagram, the lack of effective paragraphing and mechanical cohesion limits the text to a band 5.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student demonstrates a limited but minimally adequate vocabulary range suitable for describing a simple process, using terms such as 'photosynthesis', 'chemical reaction', 'harvested', and 'microbes'. However, there are numerous spelling errors ('carbone', 'ised', 'partucular', 'suger', 'labratories') and word-choice inaccuracies, such as 'excreted to atmosphere' instead of 'emitted into the atmosphere', and 'manufacturer' instead of 'factory' or 'refinery'. These noticeable errors and misspellings cause some difficulty for the reader and restrict the lexical score to a band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The text contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but attempts at complex structures are frequently faulty. Examples of grammatical errors include missing articles ('production of such product', 'added the final product of ethanol produced'), subject-verb agreement issues ('carbone dioxide ... ised by plants'), and incorrect preposition use ('ended by adding'). Punctuation is also sparse, leading to run-on sentences. Because frequent grammatical errors cause strain and difficulty for the reader, the grammar performance aligns with a band 5.0.
