IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram illustrates that how ethanol that is also called biofuel is produced.
Overall, this is a continues processs that consisting seven main stages, begining with obtaining energy from sunlight and carbon dioxide and ending with produce ethanol and distribute to transport vehicles.
First step include the obtain energy from sunlight and carbon dioxide, after that, grow the plants and tress that harvested after some time individualy by farmers. In the third step, harvested plants transfer to pre processing machine where these plants and trees convert into tiny cellulose followed by this step cellulose send to processing where different chemical reaction process occures.
After completing the processing, cellulose convert into sugars where few microbes added to these sugars and at the last step become ethanol that delivered to transport vehicles like cars, truks, and airplanes. And these vehicles discharge carbon dioxide again and this process create again and again so it is a continues process that create ethanol continuesly.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student attempts to cover the main stages of the biofuel production diagram, successfully identifying the overall circular nature of the process starting from sunlight and carbon dioxide to ethanol production and vehicle emissions. However, there are some inaccuracies and confusions in reporting the specific steps. For instance, the text states that 'cellulose convert into sugars where few microbes added', whereas the diagram shows cellulose converting to sugars, followed by microbes being added. Additionally, the description of the final stages is slightly tangled. While the main features are touched upon, the lack of precision in sequencing and some minor misinterpretations keep this response at a Band 5.5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is structured into an introduction, an overview, and body sentences detailing the process, meeting the basic requirements of organization. However, paragraphing is weak, with the body of the essay compressed into a single lengthy paragraph. Cohesive devices are repetitive and sometimes mechanical, relying heavily on phrases like 'First step include', 'after that', and 'In the third step'. Furthermore, referencing and logical progression between sentences are occasionally faulty, such as the abrupt transition in the final sentence ('And these vehicles discharge carbon dioxide...'). These issues result in a mechanical flow and place the response firmly at Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, with frequent attempts at less common words resulting in awkward collocations or incorrect word forms. Examples include 'continues processs' (continuous process), 'begining' (beginning), 'produce ethanol' (producing ethanol), and 'truks' (trucks). Words are often misused grammatically, such as 'the obtain energy' instead of 'obtaining energy'. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the general topic of biofuel production, frequent word-choice and spelling errors limit the score to Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak throughout the text. There are frequent basic errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('this is a continues processs that consisting', 'plant and trees convert'), tense inconsistencies, and missing auxiliary verbs ('First step include the obtain energy'). Punctuation is also problematic, particularly run-on sentences joined by coordinating conjunctions without proper punctuation. Because errors are frequent and occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader, this performance aligns with Band 5.0.
