IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The stipulated diagram represents the information regarding the process of production of a biofuel called ethanol.
From the bird's eye view, it is crystal clear that it is a continuous process and involves several major steps. It embarks with growth of plants and trees and ends with the manufacturing of ethanol.
To commence with, the first step is initiated with growing of crops. Nextly, the crops are harvested by the farmers. After that, pre-processing is done to form the cellulose. At the subsequent stage, the processing procedure is carried in the labs.
In the following step, the raw material is converted into fermentable sugars like glucose. Moving further, microbes are added during fermentation process. Finally, a biofuel, ethanol is produced which is than supplied to numerous vehicles such as aeroplanes, trucks and cars which produces carbon dioxide.
The major conclusion drawn from the process is that it is a comlex process and omission of single step may halt the whole process.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the main parts of the diagram, identifying the overall process of ethanol production from plant growth to transport and carbon dioxide release. However, some aspects are under-developed or presented with limited clarity, fitting the description of addressing the task only partially. While the overview correctly notes that it is a continuous process, the concluding statement introduces subjective evaluation and a logical inaccuracy regarding the diagram ("omission of single step may halt the whole process"), which is not shown in the source graphic. The reporting of stages generally follows the sequence provided in the diagram, but the selection of key features could be more fully extended and supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the information chronologically. Paragraphing is utilised to separate the introduction, body steps, and conclusion. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and faulty. Transitional phrases such as "To commence with", "Nextly", and "Moving further" are overused or slightly unnatural in academic writing. Referencing and logical progression between certain sentences lack smooth integration, resulting in a somewhat rigid flow that stops the essay from achieving a higher level of cohesive control.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
An adequate range of vocabulary is attempted for the task, including terms such as "continuous process", "raw material", and "fermentation process". However, there are notable word-choice, spelling, and word-formation errors that reveal limitations. For instance, "comlex" contains a spelling error, "embarks with" uses inappropriate collocation, and "than" is misused instead of "then". These errors do not completely impede communication, but they reflect a vocabulary control that fits squarely within the mid-range band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some attempt at subordination and relative clauses. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly involving article usage ("the manufacturing of ethanol", "during fermentation process"), prepositions, and passivisation ("the processing procedure is carried"). Complex structures are often faulty, and these persistent errors occasionally cause difficulty or hesitation for the reader, placing the grammatical performance at this level.
