IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustatres the process of producing the ethanol biofuel from plants and trees.
Overall, the production of ethanol is a cyclical process where it is initiated from growing plants and trees from sunlight and carbon dioxide. Then this will be harvested and then it will be processed into ethanol, which will be used by mode of transport. Carbon dioxide released in production and consumption which will be used by plants and trees to complete the cycle.
Intially, plants and trees are grown by absorbing the energy from the sunlight and carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. When it will bematured it will be harvested using agriculture machinaries and will undergo the pre-processing.During this stage, the harvested materials will be break into the cellulose which is then sent to the processing.
Next, the cellulose is then converted into sugar through processing. Microbes are subsequently added to the sugar to facilitiate fermentation, resulting in the production of ethanol. The produced biofuel is then used in the various transportation mode like cars, trucks and airplanes.
During the use of the ethanol carbon dioxide is released in the atmosphere. Additionally, the carbon dioxide is emitted during the certain stages of processing and transportation process. The gas is then is absorbed by plants and tree as they grow, allowing the production to continue.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main stages of how ethanol biofuel is produced and recycled in a cyclical process. The overview adequately captures the key features, such as the initial growth of plants, processing stages, use in transportation, and the release and reabsorption of carbon dioxide. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies compared to the diagram, such as stating that materials are broken into cellulose during pre-processing when the diagram shows cellulose as a distinct subsequent stage. Overall, the content is clear and covers the process well, meeting the requirements for this band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the growth of plants through to consumption and carbon dioxide recycling. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate different phases of the process. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Then', 'Intially', 'Next', and 'Additionally', though referencing is occasionally faulty or mechanical, such as 'When it will bematured it will be harvested', which disrupts the smooth flow of ideas. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to ensure smoother transitions and more flexible, natural referencing throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'cyclical process', 'fermentation', and 'transportation mode'. However, there are notable spelling and word-choice errors, including 'illustatres', 'Intially', 'machinaries', 'break' instead of 'broken', and 'facilitiate'. Word formation errors such as 'transportation mode' instead of 'modes of transport' also occur. These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect a limited control over less common lexical items, keeping the vocabulary score at this level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at complex structures such as relative clauses and temporal clauses. However, there are persistent errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly with verb forms and tense consistency, as seen in 'When it will bematured it will be harvested', 'will be break into', and 'The gas is then is absorbed'. Punctuation is also occasionally missing, such as a missing comma before dependent clauses or after introductory markers. Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, aligning well with the characteristics of this band.
