IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The diagram illlustrate how ethanol is made.

Lets sthe the information of its production process.

When plants and trees get Energy from resources like sunligh and carbon dioxide they grow and getting ready for Harvesting. Afterward The Harvest getting ready to process for using. Then the pre-processed turns into Cellulose. When the Cellulose is ready, It send to lab for processing. When the process is done, It provides Sugars. Then Microbes added in this and we get Ethanol from it.

Ethanol also use for many kind of purpose. specially, It use for the traffic fuel.

In car, truck even if in Airplane it used as Fuel. But, when Ethanol used as source of fuel. The engine provides carbon dioxide to the nature.

carbon Dioxide strat processing in the nature and stay in the air layer. With sun light It again become food of the plants and trees.

the plants again get energy from this and and start giving the Hervest.

Its again going in the same process. Its actually a cyclick way to Production of Ethanol.

Ethanol also called as BioFuel.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response partially addresses the task by attempting to describe the main stages of the ethanol production cycle shown in the diagram. An overview is attempted towards the end of the text by noting that it is a cyclic process and that ethanol is also called a biofuel. However, the information is presented in a somewhat disjointed manner, and details regarding how carbon dioxide is released and reabsorbed are described rather than properly summarised. Furthermore, some parts of the process lack clarity, such as the transition from pre-processing to cellulose and how microbes are incorporated. To reach a higher standard, the writer needs to select and report the core features of the diagram more clearly and present a more structured overview of the entire circular process without drifting into overly simplistic narrative descriptions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response displays some overall organisation, attempting to follow the sequential flow of the diagram from plant growth through to fuel usage and the carbon cycle. However, there is no clear logical progression throughout, and the paragraphing is underdeveloped, consisting of a series of short, choppy sentences rather than cohesive paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used very mechanically or are inadequate, with repetitive transitions such as 'Then', 'When', and 'It' dominating the text. Pronoun referencing is frequently unclear, leaving the reader confused about what specific terms like 'It' or 'this' refer to in sentences such as 'When the process is done, It provides Sugars. Then Microbes added in this'. To improve Coherence and Cohesion, the writer should group related stages into distinct, well-developed paragraphs and use a wider and more accurate variety of cohesive links to guide the reader smoothly through the process.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task, with frequent inappropriate word choices and spelling errors that occasionally impede communication. Words are often misused or lack precision, such as 'Lets sthe' instead of let's see, 'traffic fuel' instead of transport fuel, and 'cyclick way' instead of cyclical process. There is also unnecessary repetition of basic terms like 'Ethanol', 'plants', 'trees', and 'carbon dioxide'. Attempts to use less common vocabulary are hindered by poor word formation and spelling mistakes like 'illlustrate', 'sunligh', 'Hervest', and 'strat'. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to build a broader range of vocabulary specific to process diagrams, ensuring correct word forms, accurate collocations, and precise terminology without repetitive reliance on basic words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response features a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic clauses linked by coordinating conjunctions. Attempts at complex structures are frequently faulty, leading to frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and word order. There are noticeable issues with subject-verb agreement, missing articles, and incorrect verb tenses or passive voice formations, as seen in 'Microbes added in this', 'Ethanol also use', and 'when Ethanol used as source of fuel'. Punctuation is also problematic, with improper sentence breaks and missing capitals. To improve in this criterion, the writer must demonstrate better control over basic grammatical patterns, use accurate verb forms for process descriptions—particularly the passive voice—and incorporate a wider variety of error-free complex sentences.
