IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given flowchart illustrates the production of biofuel known as ethanol.

Overall, it has several steps including harvesting of plants and trees at first, followed by their pre processing to produce cellulose, it utilizes in processing of sugar production which further added up with microbes to create ethanol. Lastly, this ethanol is distributed to all kinds of transport which emitts carbon dioxode in enviourment used by plants and trees again.

This flowchart depicts the cyclic chain of carbondioxide in nature. Initially, the plant and trees grow with the help of sunlight and carbon dioxide. Subsequently, they harvested and delivered to factoroes where the utilized for preprocessing to manufacture cellulose. Furthermore, manufactured cellulose undergoes processing in labs to develop sugar.

Moreover, particular micro-orginsms introduced in sugar fo reaction to get by product ethanol which is also known as biofuel. Biofuel transported to fuel stations where it can delivered to numerous types of vehicals and aeroplans. Eventually, When they run by ethanol, they emitts carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. This carbon dioxide facilitates the respiration process of plants and trees again and the cycle begins.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main stages of the ethanol production cycle, satisfying the requirements for the mid-band level. The overview outlines the circular nature of the process, moving from plant growth through harvesting and processing to fuel usage and the subsequent release of carbon dioxide. However, some aspects of the process are slightly under-developed or imprecise; for instance, the description of cellulose being utilised in sugar production lacks clear connection details. The key features of the diagram are covered adequately, but further extension on how the carbon dioxide returns to the plants would strengthen the overview.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression from the beginning of the cycle to the end. Paragraphing is used to separate the introduction and overview from the detailed body sections. However, referencing and cohesion can be somewhat mechanical or faulty at times, such as the abrupt transitions between sentences like 'it utilizes in processing of sugar production which further added up with microbes'. Cohesive devices are present, including sequencing words like 'Initially', 'Subsequently', and 'Furthermore', but they occasionally lack smooth integration into the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully attempting less common terms related to the diagram such as 'pre-processing', 'micro-orginsms', and 'biofuel'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that reflect a mid-to-lower band profile, including 'carbondsioxide', 'factoroes', 'utilized' used as a noun, 'vehicals', 'aeroplans', and 'emitts'. Furthermore, typographical slips like 'enviourment' and 'fo reaction' slightly impede communication in places. To achieve a higher band, greater precision in spelling and more natural collocations are required.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over structure. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly with verb forms, voice, and prepositions. Examples include 'they harvested' (passive voice needed), 'where the utilized for preprocessing', 'micro-orginsms introduced in sugar fo reaction', and 'When they run by ethanol, they emitts'. These errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. While complex structures are attempted, they often contain grammatical flaws, keeping the response firmly in the lower-mid grammar band.
