IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The diagram illustrates the serveral stages involved in biofuel production to produce ethnol.

Overall, in first step plants and trees was grown by using sunlight and carbondioxide energy, and then in second step, trees was harvested with the help of tractors for processing. The third step was beign with pre-processing of harvested trees and plants and ends up with small coin size pieces to raw material initiated from plants, and trees to produce cellulose.

Moreover, in fifth and sixth stage cellulose was further refinied and Purified in labortries to make sugars. In last seventh step, microbes are added into sugars to make ethnol for aircrafts, trucks and cars. All of the sources of transporation and communication produce carbon dioxide, when the ethnol burns in their engine. This pictorical diagram generally tells us inf

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response attempts to describe the process of biofuel production, but it falls below the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, stopping at 132 words. The overview is very limited, and the summary of main features is partial and lacks a clear, comprehensive account of the entire cycle shown in the diagram. Some stages are described with irrelevant or inaccurate details, such as mentioning coin-sized pieces and laboratories, which are not supported by the visual data. The carbon dioxide recycling loop is only partially explained at the end. To improve, you must ensure you write at least 150 words and present a clear, well-supported overview of all key stages in the process without inventing details.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some basic organization with transitional markers such as "Overall," "then," and "Moreover," but the text lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is disjointed, and the final sentence trails off incomplete ("This pictorical diagram generally tells us inf"). Cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or repetitive, and referencing between steps is occasionally unclear. To move up, you should structure your essay into a clear introduction/overview followed by logical body paragraphs that trace the process from start to finish smoothly, ensuring every sentence is completed properly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. There are several spelling mistakes, such as "serveral" instead of several, "ethnol" instead of ethanol, "carbondioxide", "beign", "refinied", "Purified", "labortries", and "pictorical". Word choices and collocations show noticeable errors, such as "sources of transporation and communication produce carbon dioxide" when referring to vehicles. To achieve a higher band, you must use a wider range of vocabulary with accurate spelling and precise terms related to scientific processes and manufacturing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent grammatical errors. There are issues with subject-verb agreement and tense consistency, such as "plants and trees was grown", "trees was harvested", and "The third step was beign with". Articles and plurals are also misused throughout the text. To improve, you need to exercise better control over basic grammatical structures, ensure correct verb forms in the passive voice, and eliminate frequent errors that disrupt readability.
