IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram demonstrates the process of how the biofuel named ethanol is produced.
Overall, the process is consist of different various stages from absorbing carbon dioxide to providing fuel to various transportation. In the end, the carbon dioxide released by engines again absorbed by trees and plants.
initially, the sunlight and carbon dioxide is absorbed by plants and trees to grow. secondly plants and trees are harvested. After that, it is passing through pre-processing machine. Then it makes cellulose which is processed in laboratory. After processing it makes sugars.
In the final stages, the sugar is added with microbes that produced ethanol. Subsequently, the biofuel ethanol is ready to use in different transport like, Cars, Trucks and aircraft. When this biofuel is used the transport release carbon dioxide that can be used to make the ethanol again. The carbon dioxide observing by plants repeatedly which is used make it again in the cyclic processed.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all key stages of the ethanol production process depicted in the diagram, satisfying the requirements for Task Achievement at this level. The overview correctly highlights the cyclical nature of the process, noting both the creation of biofuel and the recycling of carbon dioxide. However, some aspects of the response remain under-developed or simplistic. For instance, the description of how pre-processing and cellulose lead into laboratory processing lacks precise detail from the visual. While the main features are successfully selected and reported, extending the explanations of specific steps and providing a more cohesive overview would push the response further.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay demonstrates a generally coherent overall arrangement with a clear sequence of steps from the beginning to the end of the biofuel cycle. Paragraphing is used to separate the introduction, overview, and body steps. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical, relying heavily on basic sequencing words such as 'initially', 'secondly', and 'after that'. Referencing and logical transitions between sentences occasionally falter, such as the abrupt shift between sentences in the second body paragraph. To improve Coherence and Cohesion, the writer needs to employ a wider and more natural variety of cohesive devices and ensure smoother transitions between ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the basic steps of the diagram. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'biofuel', 'microbes', and 'cyclic', but demonstrates some inaccuracy in word choice and word formation, such as 'the carbon dioxide observing by plants' instead of 'absorbed', and 'cyclic processed' instead of 'process'. Spelling and word-choice errors do not impede communication, but they reflect a limited and developing lexical range. To reach a higher band, the writer should incorporate a wider variety of precise, task-specific terminology and eliminate word formation errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though attempts at complex structures are often accompanied by errors in grammar and punctuation. There are noticeable errors in verb forms, voice, and subject-verb agreement, such as 'the process is consist of' instead of 'consists of', and 'sunlight and carbon dioxide is absorbed' instead of 'are absorbed'. Additionally, article errors and awkward preposition use occur throughout the text. While these errors rarely completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to restrict the score at this level. Enhancing control over passive voice and subject-verb agreement will greatly improve accuracy.
