IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
There is a graph indicate in how a biofuel production : ethanol. And the metabolomics cycling around the planet. It conclude with energy and material layers.
The plants and tress growed with energy, it came from sunlight and carbon dioxide. When the plant grows mature, people will harvest them, and pre-processing them into little pieces. The small fractures contain in cellulose, it sturctured like spider net. After chemistry processing in lab, scientist made the cellulose into sugars. This also called hydrosis in chemistry. With the microbes added, sugare were used to converted into ethanol.
What's more, ethanol were widely use in range of transpotation tool, like cars, vans and plane. By the vehicle and flight burning the biofuel, which cause more cabon dioxide in atmosphere enviorment. It also meant is a new cycle for coorperations and plants growing.
Ethanol biofuel were closely in human society and natural life. And is eco-friendly for human beings and non human beings on the earth,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify several central stages, including plant growth, harvesting, pre-processing, conversion to sugars, the addition of microbes and ethanol use in transport. You also recognise the cycle linking carbon dioxide from transport back to plant growth. However, the response only partially reports the diagram: the opening claim about “metabolomics” and “energy and material layers” is unclear, and the final comments that the fuel is “eco-friendly” and important to society are not shown by the process diagram. Some details are invented or inaccurate, such as “vans,” cutting the material into “little pieces,” and describing cellulose as a “spider net.” A clearer overview of the cycle and a more precise account of the labelled stages would make the report more complete and better grounded in the visual.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation: the response moves broadly from plant growth through processing to transport and carbon dioxide, and paragraph breaks separate parts of this sequence. Linking phrases such as “When,” “After,” and “With” help show order. However, there is no clear, concise overview, and the opening sentences do not establish a coherent focus. Connections between stages are sometimes difficult to follow, particularly “The small fractures contain in cellulose” and “It also meant is a new cycle.” The final paragraph shifts from describing the diagram to making broad claims about human society and nature. Organise the report into an overview followed by the production stages and the transport-and-recycling loop, using clear references and transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You attempt some topic-specific vocabulary, including “cellulose,” “microbes,” “ethanol,” and “carbon dioxide,” which helps identify the process. There is also some variety in verbs such as “harvest” and “converted.” However, vocabulary control is uneven, and several spelling errors or inaccurate word choices make parts difficult to understand: “tress,” “sugare,” “transpotation,” “cabon,” and “coorperations.” Phrases such as “metabolomics cycling around the planet” and “energy and material layers” do not communicate a clear process meaning. Some expressions are also imprecise for a diagram report, including “little pieces” and “widely use.” Use accurate process terms and check spelling and collocations so that the reader can follow each stage without guessing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, and the sequence is sometimes expressed through subordinate clauses, as in “When the plant grows mature, people will harvest them.” However, control of sentence structure and verb forms is inconsistent, and errors frequently make relationships unclear. Examples include “There is a graph indicate,” “The plants and tress growed,” “ethanol were widely use,” and the incomplete construction “By the vehicle and flight burning the biofuel, which cause…” Agreement, tense, and clause formation need particular attention. Some sentences also lack a clear subject or complete predicate, as in “And is eco-friendly…” Practise writing complete sentences with a consistent present tense for process descriptions, and check subject–verb agreement and the form of each verb.
