IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given diagram illustrates that how biofuel is produced and it is also known as ethanol.Overall, biofuel production goes through from several steps.

It starts with planting of plants and tree and crops and let them to be adult. The trees and plants and crops use energy obtain from sunlight and carbon gases. After the growth of crops, the next step is harvest them. The next main step is pre-processing and after it is processed, the cellulose is obtain. The next step consider is the processing of the cellulose and to get sugars. After that, microbes are added in the obtained sugars to produce useable ethanol. The transportation of biofuel is done and it is use in different types of vehicle.Cars, trucks and airplanes use ethanol and the carbon dioxide emmitt from these vehicles and planes is released in air and observe by plants and tress.Plants and trees use carbon dioxide and sunlight in form of energy and plants and trees release oxygen.

To conclude, the production of biofuel consist of different stages and from harvesting of crops and processing of crops and cellulose and add on of sugars in cellulose biofuel is obtained.Biofuel is use in vehicles and planes and they release carbon dioxide which is observe by the trees and plants.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main stages, from plant growth and harvesting through pre-processing, cellulose, processing, sugars, microbes and ethanol, and you recognise the cycle linking vehicle use and carbon dioxide back to plants. This gives the reader a relevant account of the process. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the diagram shows plants and trees growing, not crops being planted, and it does not show oxygen being released. The final summary also says sugars are added to cellulose, whereas cellulose is processed to produce sugars. Your overview that production involves several stages is quite general, and the stages are not always explained precisely. Focus on the diagram’s actual sequence and avoid adding information that is not shown.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response follows the broad order of the diagram, using markers such as “After the growth,” “The next main step,” and “After that” to guide the reader through the process. It also includes an opening and a concluding summary, so the overall arrangement is understandable. However, most information is placed in one long paragraph, and the repeated “next step” phrasing makes the progression mechanical. The conclusion repeats earlier points rather than adding a concise overview, while links such as “after it is processed” leave the reference unclear. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and process details, and connect stages with more varied, precise transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “pre-processing,” “cellulose,” “microbes,” and “ethanol,” which helps communicate the subject. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “adult” for plants reaching maturity, “useable ethanol,” and “observe by plants.” Repetition of “plants and trees,” “next step,” and “carbon dioxide” also limits flexibility. Spelling errors such as “emmitt” and “tress” are noticeable. Build a more precise set of process verbs and collocations, and check spelling and word forms so the technical stages are expressed clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a sequence of clauses describing how sugars are converted into ethanol and how carbon dioxide returns to plants. The main meaning is generally recoverable, but errors in sentence structure, verb forms, agreement, articles and punctuation occur across the response. For example, “illustrates that how biofuel is produced” has an incorrect clause pattern, while “the cellulose is obtain” and “the carbon dioxide … is observe” use incorrect verb forms. Singular and plural forms are also inconsistent in “plants and tree.” Improve control of basic sentence patterns and passive constructions, and use full stops and spaces consistently to make the stages easier to follow.
