IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram depicts information about the process of making ethanol from biofuel in various stages.
Overall, for production of ethanol takes several stages from harvesting plants and tress to a final stage fuel for various vehicle use.
After analyzing the diagram, it can be seen clearly that the whole process is in cycle form where plants and trees grown with the help of solar energy and carbon dioxide. Afterthat they harvest them for pre-processing in which they extract cellulose from the machine.
In the following step, they start processing it to formulate sugar molecules from cellulose in this molecules they added micobes to form a perfect blend of ethanol. Furthermore, this ethanol use as a fuel in various vehicles such as car, bus, aeroplane, trucks etc. which emmit combustion of carbon dioxide in the environment and this carbon dioxide mixed with atmosphere. which form a loop process.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the diagram as a cyclical process and mention several key stages, including plant growth, harvesting, processing, sugar formation, microbes, ethanol, and carbon dioxide. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: cellulose is produced after pre-processing, rather than being extracted “from the machine,” and the diagram shows a car, truck, and aeroplane, not a bus. The overview also says the process ends with fuel for vehicles, but should make clear that carbon dioxide from their use returns to support plant growth. The response is three words below the required minimum, and several stages are only briefly described. Report the sequence more precisely and include the cycle’s starting and returning points.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic paragraph structure, moving from an introduction and overview to descriptions of the process and its outcome. It also uses sequencing expressions such as “After analyzing the diagram” and “In the following step.” However, progression is not consistently clear: the second paragraph combines the cycle overview with harvesting and pre-processing, while the final paragraph packs several later stages and the cycle’s return into one long sentence. References such as “in this molecules” are difficult to follow, and the final sentence fragment beginning “which form a loop process” weakens the ending. Organise the stages in order across clearer paragraphs and use linking words and references more precisely.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “pre-processing,” “cellulose,” “ethanol,” and “carbon dioxide,” which helps convey the topic. There is also an attempt to use more formal wording, such as “depicts” and “formulate.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this diagram: “perfect blend” does not describe the addition of microbes, “combustion of carbon dioxide” misrepresents the emissions, and “various vehicle use” is awkward. Spelling errors such as “tress,” “micobes,” and “emmit” also reduce precision. Choose terms that describe the process directly, such as “microbes are added” and “carbon dioxide is released,” and check spelling and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “which ethanol use as a fuel” and a sequence linked with “Furthermore.” However, grammatical errors occur frequently and sometimes make relationships between stages unclear. Examples include “for production of ethanol takes several stages,” “plants and trees grown,” and “they added micobes,” where sentence structure, verb forms, or agreement are faulty. The sentence beginning “After analyzing the diagram” also shifts awkwardly into “it can be seen clearly,” and the final “which form a loop process” is an incomplete sentence. Practise complete sentence patterns and consistent passive forms, for example, “The plants are harvested” and “microbes are added.”
