IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given figure illustrates how production of the ethanol is also known as a biofuel.
Overall, a cyclic diagram demonstrates with given 8 procedures from plants and trees growning with sunlight energy and carbon dioxides to harvesting. While cellulose made by pre-processing and converts into sugars. The transformation of sugars into microbes and produce ethanol for numerous applications.
In first process, solar energy and carbon dioxide are essential part for the growth of plants and trees. After harvesting with agriculture equipments, it is ready for pre-processing. Furthermore, pre-processing of the harvested mixture help to fabrication of cellulose . The chemical processing is need to assists from sugars with cellulose. The structural formula of sugars is appear and futher addition of microbes are pretty crucial for production of final stage is called ethanol. Moreover, the utilization of ethanol in automobiles, such as, aircrafts, trucks and passenger cars. These chemical reaction occurs in the engine of automobile which help to produce carbon dioxide. Afterall, this carbon dioxide is again ready for the growth of plantation with the completation of the cycle.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover the main stages and identify the overall cycle, from plant growth and harvesting through processing to ethanol use and carbon dioxide returning to support plant growth. This gives the reader a relevant account of the diagram. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the overview refers to “8 procedures,” although the diagram presents a longer sequence, and “transformation of sugars into microbes” misrepresents the step, which shows microbes being added to sugars before ethanol is produced. The description also says cellulose is “made by pre-processing” without clearly explaining the sequence from harvested material to cellulose. To strengthen the response, report the stages precisely and distinguish the production steps from the later use of ethanol in transport.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph describing the process in sequence. Connectors such as “Overall,” “Furthermore,” and “Moreover” help signal progression, and the final sentence returns to the cycle’s starting point. However, some links are mechanical or do not express the relationship clearly. For example, “While cellulose made by pre-processing and converts into sugars” is difficult to connect to the preceding overview, and “The chemical processing is need to assists from sugars with cellulose” disrupts the sequence. Organise the stages in clear chronological order and use linking phrases to show cause or transition only where appropriate. Clearer sentence boundaries and references would make the progression easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You attempt a range of process-related vocabulary, including “pre-processing,” “cellulose,” “microbes,” and “utilization,” and the reader can generally identify the topic and stages. However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “fabrication of cellulose,” “structural formula of sugars,” and “transformation of sugars into microbes.” Some forms are also misspelled or incorrectly formed, including “growning,” “futher,” and “completation.” These choices sometimes obscure the intended meaning, particularly when describing the conversion stages. Prefer precise, conventional process language—for example, say that cellulose is processed into sugars and that microbes are added—rather than using technical-sounding phrases that the diagram does not support. Proofreading spelling and word forms would improve clarity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You use both simple statements and attempts at longer, more complex sentences, and the overall sequence can usually be understood. However, some sentence structures are faulty, especially where clauses are joined or verbs are formed. For example, “Overall, a cyclic diagram demonstrates with given 8 procedures” lacks a clear grammatical construction, while “The chemical processing is need to assists” combines incompatible verb forms. There are also errors in agreement and articles, as in “These chemical reaction occurs,” and in “an essential part” where the article is missing. Aim for a reliable subject–verb pattern in each sentence, and check verb forms after auxiliaries and singular or plural subjects. Shorter, accurate sentences would help you express the stages before adding more complex structures.
