IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

The given process diagram elucidates the mass manufacturing of Biofuel production .This process is a joint venture of humans and machines which work together for a single product . Overall it can be seen that the mass production of Biofuel production is carried out more than ten distinctive steps . additionally the process starts from plants and trees grow and end at harvesting . Futhermore all steps are very important and are connected with each others . Talking about initial steps first step is Energy sunlight + carbon dioxide which is connected is plants and trees grow the next step is Harvesting and pre processing and the next step is Cellulose and the next step is Processing and sugar are connected with Microbes added with Ethanol which is connectes with all carbon Dioxide . All these processes complete almost half of the total procedure . Hence a finished product is obtained by following different phases of the mass manufacturing of Biofuel production .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response identifies the subject as ethanol biofuel production and mentions several genuine stages, including plant growth, harvesting, pre-processing, cellulose, processing, sugars and microbes. However, it reports the process only minimally and misstates key features: it says production “starts from plants and trees grow and end at harvesting,” although harvesting is followed by further stages and the cycle returns carbon dioxide to the plants. The overview that the stages are “very important” does not summarise the main pattern, and the transport uses of ethanol and carbon-dioxide cycle are omitted. The sequence is also unclear in places, such as “sugar are connected with Microbes added with Ethanol.” A more accurate overview and a clear account of the full cycle would make the summary more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is an attempt to organise the response with an opening, an overview and a description of stages, and connectors such as “Overall,” “Furthermore” and “Hence” show an effort to guide the reader. However, the ideas are not arranged coherently enough to follow the process reliably. The overview incorrectly says the process ends at harvesting, while the later description lists stages beyond it. The long sequence beginning “Talking about initial steps” strings many stages together without clear sentence boundaries or relationships, and “All these processes complete almost half” is not clearly linked to the diagram. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and stage-by-stage account, and connect each stage in the correct order with precise references.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses some task-related vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “pre-processing,” “cellulose,” “microbes” and “carbon dioxide,” so the reader can recognise the general topic. However, the range is limited and several phrases are repetitive or poorly matched to a process diagram. “Mass manufacturing of Biofuel production” is redundant, while “joint venture of humans and machines” is an unnatural description of the diagram. Repeated use of “the next step” also limits precision. Spelling and word-form errors such as “Futhermore” and “connectes” are noticeable and can distract the reader. Prefer concise process language such as “is converted into,” “is then processed,” and “the resulting ethanol is used as fuel.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts both simple and longer sentence forms, including “Overall it can be seen that…” and a sequence joined with “which.” However, control is uneven, and errors in sentence construction and agreement sometimes make relationships difficult to understand. For example, “the mass production … is carried out more than ten distinctive steps” does not form a clear grammatical relationship, and “sugar are connected with Microbes added with Ethanol” has agreement and clause-structure problems. There are also missing or misplaced articles and punctuation, as in “first step is Energy sunlight + carbon dioxide,” and several sentences run together without appropriate full stops. Build shorter, complete sentences first, then combine stages using accurate passive forms such as “The cellulose is processed into sugars.”
