IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The cyclic process depicts the production of biofuel or so called ethanol consist of several stages.
Overall, the cyclic process in which the final stage leads back to the initial stage which is energy source and ti consist of around 10 stages.
Initially to produce ethanol, plants and trees use energy source comprise of sunlight and carbon dioxide to grow. Subsequently, that will harvest before pre-processing of it to make cellulose. To make ethanol from cellulose it consist of three integral steps. Firstly it will be process the cellulose and then turn it into sugars. To gain ethanol, Microbes are added to sugars.
This ethanol is now used in different mode of transport from air to land. Some specially mention vehicles are cars, trucks and airplanes. This vehicles then emit carbon dioxide in nature and these emitted carbon dioxide will be used by trees and in this way whole process continues in cyclic manner.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the main stages and the overall cyclical nature of the diagram, including plant growth, harvesting, cellulose processing, sugar production, the addition of microbes, transport use and carbon dioxide returning to plants. This gives the response a clear, relevant account of the process. The overview identifies that the final stage links back to the beginning, although describing the cycle as having “around 10 stages” is less useful than summarising its key transformation and carbon-recycling features. Some details are underdeveloped: for example, the processing stage is mentioned but not explained beyond turning cellulose into sugars, and the three transport modes could be integrated more concisely. To strengthen the overview, state explicitly that ethanol is produced from plant material and its use releases carbon dioxide that supports further plant growth.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is arranged in a sensible sequence: an introduction and overview are followed by the production stages and then the fuel’s use and return cycle. Sequencing expressions such as “Initially,” “Subsequently,” and “Firstly” help the reader follow the process, and the paragraphing separates the main phases. Some connections are mechanical or unclear, however. “To make ethanol from cellulose it consist of three integral steps” interrupts the flow, while “This ethanol” and “This vehicles” do not provide consistently clear grammatical reference. The overview also repeats the idea of a cycle without adding much detail. For stronger progression, group related stages more smoothly and use precise references such as “the resulting ethanol” and “these vehicles.”
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a relevant range of process vocabulary, including “pre-processing,” “cellulose,” “sugars,” “microbes,” and “emit carbon dioxide.” These terms show that you can describe the diagram’s technical stages, and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “integral steps” and “cyclic manner,” though some expressions are unnatural or imprecise: “energy source comprise of,” “that will harvest,” and “different mode of transport.” “Some specially mention vehicles” is particularly awkward and makes the intended meaning less fluent. Aim for accurate collocations and concise process language, for example “the plants are harvested,” “the resulting fuel,” and “various modes of transport.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “the final stage leads back to the initial stage” and a sequence of linked process steps. However, grammatical control is uneven, and errors occur in several sentence patterns. For example, “the production of biofuel … consist” has subject–verb disagreement, while “it will be process the cellulose” uses an incorrect verb form. “This vehicles then emit” also has a demonstrative–noun agreement error, and the opening overview contains the incomplete phrase “and ti consist.” These errors sometimes make the reader pause, even though the process remains understandable. Practise accurate passive forms for process descriptions, such as “the plants are harvested” and “the cellulose is processed,” alongside agreement and sentence editing.
