IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
It is the diagram which represents the procedure which carried out while the procduction of biofuel known as ethanol .It shows the hole proccess of it .
It starts with the energy intake of plants and trees. The energy is sunlight and carbon dioxide. After the consuption of natural energy plants and trees grew up .Then the farmers or manufacturers harvest them to proccess them .After harvesting the plants and trees they are passed through a machine .The process of passing them from machine is mantioned as pre-processing.The pre-processing makes then cellulose which is then used in processing with chemicals or as chemical. Then the processing ends upwith the production of suger .Some living objects or things like microbes are added in suger to make it ethanol. Then at last ethanol is used by vechiles such as cars, trucks and air planes .The vechiles those use ethanol emits carbon dioxide which is agin used as the source of energy fro plant .
This is the summery of hole process which is used and repeated for the production of ethanol.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response covers the main sequence, from sunlight and carbon dioxide supporting plant growth through harvesting, processing, sugar production, and ethanol use in transport. It also recognises the cycle by noting that vehicle emissions return as a source for plants. However, the overview is not clearly separated or developed, and some details are vague or unsupported: for example, the text says the material passes through “a machine” and suggests processing uses “chemicals,” neither of which is specified in the diagram. The account also omits the explicit cellulose stage as an intermediate product and does not clearly explain that microbes are added to sugars. To improve, report the stages precisely and give a concise overview of the circular nature of the process.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The stages are generally presented in the correct order, and sequencing expressions such as “It starts,” “After,” “Then,” and “at last” help the reader follow the process. The final sentence also attempts to summarise the cycle. However, the response is written as one long paragraph, so the overview and process details are not clearly organised into sections. Several links are repetitive or awkward, particularly the repeated use of “After” and “Then,” and the reference in “The process of passing them from machine” is unclear. Use a brief overview followed by a logically grouped description of the stages, and vary linking language while making each reference explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some relevant process vocabulary, including “harvest,” “pre-processing,” “cellulose,” “microbes,” and “carbon dioxide,” which allows the main stages to be identified. However, the range is limited and several word-choice, spelling, and collocation errors make the description less clear or less appropriate for an academic report. Examples include “hole proccess,” “suger,” “living objects,” and “energy intake”; “living objects” is especially imprecise for microbes. Some wording is also repetitive, such as “plants and trees” and “process.” Build a more accurate process vocabulary and check spelling, while choosing precise terms from the diagram rather than adding vague descriptions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts some longer sentences and uses sequencing clauses, for example, “After harvesting the plants and trees they are passed through a machine.” However, sentence structures are mostly simple or joined with repeated connectors, and errors occur frequently enough to affect fluency. Examples include the incomplete opening construction “It is the diagram which represents the procedure which carried out,” the tense shift in “plants and trees grew up,” and the unclear construction “The process of passing them from machine is mentioned as pre-processing.” Articles, verb forms, and sentence boundaries also need attention. Practise forming clear passive sentences for process descriptions, such as “The plants are harvested and pre-processed,” and proofread each sentence for a complete, correctly formed clause.
