IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given diagram shows the various stage involved in the process of making ethanol.
overall, it is cleared that the process consits of various main stages, beginning with growing of plants and trees by observing sunlight and carbondioxide form the nature nad ending with after production of ethanol. it is cyclical process.
At the first stage, plants and trees grow by absorbing sunlight and carbondioxide form the nature. following this , plants and trees are harvested by farmers and pre procesing is done by using a machine. one this process has been completed , plants and trees are converted into celloulose. subsquently, this celloluse are processed in a factory.
In the next stage, celloluse are converted into a sugars.Afterthat , that sugars are transformed into microbes. finally , microbes are prodeced into a ethanol, that is our final product . follwing this , that ethanol is used by different types of vehicle such as aeroplane, bus , truck , car etc , the vehicles are emitted huge amount of carbondioxide gas which is absorbed by plants and trees during the time of photosynthesis. At last, the process always continue in cyclical process.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the main stages and identify the cyclical nature of the process, from plant growth through processing and ethanol production to carbon dioxide returning to the plants. This gives the response a relevant overview and a generally accurate account. Some details, however, are misreported or imprecise: the diagram shows microbes being added to sugars, not sugars being transformed into microbes, and it shows ethanol used by a car, truck and aeroplane, not a bus. The opening also says plants grow by “observing” sunlight, which does not accurately describe the process. To strengthen the response further, report the key inputs and outputs precisely and distinguish the stages more clearly; the overall cycle is recognised, but some features are not fully or accurately developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by stages in sequence, with a final explanation of the cycle. Sequencing phrases such as “At the first stage,” “In the next stage” and “finally” help the reader follow the process. However, the linking is sometimes mechanical, and several transitions are awkward or unclear, including “one this process has been completed” and “Afterthat.” The long final sentence combines ethanol use, vehicle emissions and absorption by plants, making the relationships harder to follow. Use fewer repeated stage markers and divide the final explanation into shorter, logically connected sentences. Clearer referencing would also help readers identify what “that” and “this process” refer to.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “cellulose,” “processed,” “factory” and “cyclical,” so the topic is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, such as “observing sunlight,” “converted into a sugars,” “transformed into microbes” and “microbes are produced into a ethanol.” These choices sometimes obscure the intended stages. Spelling errors are also noticeable, for example “consits,” “carbondioxide,” “celloulose” and “prodeced.” Aim to use precise process verbs and check the spelling of key technical terms. For instance, describe microbes as being added to the sugars, and say that the sugars are fermented or processed to produce ethanol.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, and the sequence is mostly understandable. However, errors in sentence construction, agreement, articles and verb forms are frequent enough to make some parts difficult to read. Examples include “the various stage involved,” “this celloluse are processed,” “a sugars,” and “microbes are prodeced into a ethanol.” The overview also contains a run-on sequence of ideas, while punctuation and capitalisation are inconsistent, as in the lower-case “overall” after the first sentence and spaces before commas. Practise forming accurate subject–verb patterns and singular/plural noun phrases, then proofread each sentence for articles and punctuation. Shorter sentences would help you control the grammar while retaining some complex structures.
