IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 4.5)
The given diagram reoresents the comparison between biofuel production and how ethanol is made. This formation required basic needs as well as energy, sunlight and carbon-dioxide.These three things are compulsory for the production of biofuel and ethanol.
Overall, some of the requirements like the development of plants and trees and harvesting are compulsory for the given needs. And after pre-processing we obtained the sugars and then added microbes in it.
However, when we obtained required needs like ethanol and bio-fuel after doing all the given procedure.Basically, the requirement of ethanol is necessary in our daily life.Commonly, ethanol is used in cars, trucks and also in the jets. This show how ethanol and bio-fuel is playing a vital role in our daily life. There are also some drawbacks of using these things. For example our air air is polluted with the smoke which can be pr

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify the topic and mention several relevant stages, including plant growth, harvesting, pre-processing, sugars, microbes and ethanol. However, the response only minimally summarises the diagram: it does not clearly explain the full sequence from cellulose through processing, nor the cycle in which carbon dioxide from transport returns to support plant growth. The overview is vague, and claims such as “these three things are compulsory” and the discussion of air pollution are not accurately grounded in the diagram. The final sentence is also cut off. The response contains 134 words, below the required 150, which further limits the coverage. Focus on describing the stages and the circular relationship shown, rather than adding unsupported commentary about daily life or drawbacks.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The response has paragraph breaks and attempts to signal an overview with “Overall” and a contrast with “However,” so there is some basic organisation. However, the ideas do not progress clearly through the process. The second paragraph jumps from plant growth and harvesting to sugars and microbes, while the next shifts to ethanol’s everyday use and pollution without linking these points to the diagram’s cycle. Connect each stage in sequence using clear references such as “the resulting cellulose” and “the carbon dioxide released by transport.” Several transitions are awkward or misleading, and the unfinished final sentence interrupts the ending. A more coherent structure would use an introduction, a concise overview, and a chronological description of the stages.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “pre-processing,” “sugars,” “microbes,” “ethanol” and “harvesting,” which helps identify parts of the diagram. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or repetitive. “Comparison” does not describe a process diagram, and “requirements” is repeatedly used where “inputs” or “stages” would be clearer. Phrases such as “obtained the sugars” and “the requirement of ethanol” are unnatural in this context. There are also spelling and form errors, including “reoresents,” “bio-fuel,” and “air air.” Use precise process verbs and nouns, such as “is converted into,” “is processed,” and “emissions,” to describe the sequence and carbon cycle more accurately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt some longer sentence forms, for example, “after doing all the given procedure,” and use basic present-tense statements to describe the process. However, the range is limited, and errors in sentence construction and punctuation are frequent enough to make parts difficult to follow. “This show how ethanol and bio-fuel is playing” has subject–verb agreement problems, while “when we obtained required needs” does not form a clear grammatical clause. Articles and plurals are also inconsistent, as in “all the given procedure.” Several sentences run together because spaces are missing after full stops and commas, and the final sentence is incomplete. Practise clear present-simple process sentences, for example, “The cellulose is processed into sugars, to which microbes are added.”
