Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The ideas are relevant, focusing on financial security and parental guidance. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the example regarding parents in the USA is a bit vague, and the connection between the COVID-19 pandemic and young people's savings could be more explicitly linked to the prompt's focus on 'young people'. While the main points are clear, they lack the depth and detailed support required for a higher band score. The conclusion effectively summarizes the position, but the overall development remains at a basic level.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', and 'In conclusion' are used to link ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. The progression of ideas is generally logical, moving from the importance of saving to parental influence and then to the necessity of a financial safety net. However, there are instances where the flow is slightly disrupted by awkward phrasing, such as the transition between the discussion of parents and the example of the pandemic. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and the structure is coherent.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are some attempts at more sophisticated vocabulary, such as 'uncertain expenses' and 'mishappening', though the latter is not a standard collocation. Some word choices are slightly imprecise, such as 'pupils' to refer to children in a family context or 'fullf' which appears to be a typo. The range of vocabulary is sufficient to discuss the topic, but it lacks the precision and variety needed for a higher band. Spelling errors, such as 'spend' instead of 'spent' and 'fullf', occur but do not significantly impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('saving money help', 'people use their savings for their livings'), article usage, and tense consistency ('new mothers did notspend'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some sentences starting with lowercase letters or having unnecessary capitalization. These errors are noticeable and occur throughout the text, although they rarely prevent the reader from understanding the intended message. A greater focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would improve the score.
