Student answer (Band 8.0)

Many people believe that saving money is important for everyone, including young people and I completely agree with this view. In today's uncertain world, having saving can provide financial security and helps individuals achieve their future goals. Therefore, learning to save from an early age is valuable habit.

One major reason why saving money is important is that it protects people from unexpected situations. Life is unpredictable, and emergencies such as illness, unemployment, or sudden expenses can occur at any time. People who have savings are better prepared to deal with these difficulties without relying on loans or financial support from others. Young people, in particular, can benefit greatly by developing this habit early, as even small amounts saved regularly can grow into a useful fund over time.

Another reason is that savings allow people to fulfil their long-term ambitions. Many young individuals hope to continue their education, start a business, buy a house, or travel abroad. Achieving these goals often requires a considerable amount of money. By saving consistently, young people can become more financially independent and reduce their dependence on others. For example, students who save part of their income from part-time jobs may be able to pay for educational expenses themselves, which can also increase their sense of responsibility.

However, saving money does not mean avoiding all spending. Young people should still invest in their education, health, and personal development, as these are important for future success. The key is to maintain a balance between enjoying the present and preparing for the future.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that everyone, especially young people, should save money. Savings provide security during difficult times and help people achieve their future aspirations. Developing this habit at a young age can lead to a more stable and successful life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it throughout the essay. Each paragraph is dedicated to a distinct, relevant reason—financial security and the achievement of long-term goals—which are well-supported with logical explanations and examples, such as students using part-time income for educational expenses. The conclusion effectively summarises your main points. To reach a higher band, you could further extend your ideas by briefly discussing the potential counter-argument (e.g., the risk of excessive frugality leading to a lack of life experience) in more depth before refuting it, which would demonstrate a more nuanced exploration of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth. You make effective use of cohesive devices such as 'One major reason', 'Another reason', and 'In conclusion', which guide the reader through your argument. The referencing is clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate. To improve further, ensure that the connection between sentences within paragraphs is always fluid; occasionally, the flow could be enhanced by using a wider variety of linking words or referencing techniques to avoid a slightly formulaic structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'financial security', 'unpredictable', 'long-term ambitions', and 'financially independent' are used accurately and appropriately. There is an attempt to use less common items, and your word choice is generally natural. However, there is a minor error in the first paragraph: 'having saving' should be 'having savings'. To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions that sound less like standard textbook English, while maintaining the current level of accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Your control over grammar is generally strong, and the majority of your sentences are error-free. You use complex structures, such as conditional-like logic ('If... then' implied) and relative clauses, effectively. Punctuation is used correctly throughout. There are very few errors, such as the minor noun-form issue mentioned in the lexical section. To reach the next level, aim to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical forms, such as inversion or more advanced passive constructions, while ensuring they remain error-free and natural in context.
