The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The ideas are relevant, discussing the importance of saving for emergencies and retirement. However, the development is somewhat uneven; while the points are clear, they could be extended with more sophisticated analysis. The final paragraph is incomplete, which impacts the overall development of the argument. Despite this, the main points are well-supported with examples like the COVID-19 pandemic and the needs of the elderly. To reach a higher band, ensure all paragraphs are fully concluded and explore the implications of the arguments in greater depth.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', and 'On the other hand' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'so that' and 'therefore'. Referencing is generally clear, though some sentences feel slightly disjointed due to grammatical issues. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the abrupt ending of the final paragraph suggests a lack of careful planning or time management, which affects the overall flow of the essay.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey their ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'financial crisis', 'employment opportunities', and 'basic amenities'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'buying new business equity on low rate' and 'people is leaving of a job'. These errors do not impede communication, but they highlight a need for more precise usage. Expanding the range of vocabulary to include more academic collocations would improve the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('people is leaving'), article usage, and sentence fragments ('If they cannot have money in crisis situations so that people cannot survive'). Punctuation is also inconsistent in places. While the student attempts complex structures, these are often where the errors occur. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction and proofreading for common errors like pluralization and verb tense consistency.
