Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The essay addresses the prompt clearly and maintains a consistent position throughout. The ideas regarding financial security, independence, and personal responsibility are relevant and well-supported with examples, such as the student using savings for higher education. The response covers all parts of the task, though the development of ideas could be slightly more sophisticated to reach a higher band. The introduction and conclusion are clear, and the overall argument is logically sustained. To improve, ensure that the link between saving and 'dignity' is explained with more depth, as this is an interesting point that could be expanded upon to demonstrate a more nuanced understanding of the topic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is generally smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'For example', and 'Therefore' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, there are some minor issues with referencing and sentence-level cohesion, such as the slightly awkward phrasing in 'The are numerous benefits'. While the paragraphing is appropriate, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of cohesive markers to connect ideas more fluidly. Overall, the structure is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task and allows the student to convey their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at using less common vocabulary, such as 'extravagance' and 'accountable', which is positive. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'brings from financial security' (should be 'brings financial security') and 'get panic' (should be 'panic'). Spelling errors like 'extravangance' and 'debit' (used instead of 'debt') also occur. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring accurate spelling of key terms related to the topic.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('if one have saved') and article usage. Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'In definitely agree with this idea'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are persistent throughout the text. To improve, the student should work on sentence construction and proofreading for basic grammatical slips, such as verb tense consistency and pluralization, to ensure a higher level of accuracy in complex structures.
