Student answer (Band 4.5)

Over the past few decades, pollution became a significant issue for human life. Some people argued that the government should declare a vehicle-free day in week, in which all these private vehicles are banned, while the public transport is permitted. This essay will discuss both views before giving my opinion. I believe the advantages are far greater than disadvantages.

On the first hand, the primary benefit is that it will help us to reduce pollution, which is one of the most dangerous problem for all lives, animals, and human life. It will not only decrease CO₂, but also help us to maintain a balanced life. Moreover, another advantage is that it decrease the number of vehicles, which can help us to decline traffic congestion in emergency situation. Finally, it can growth economy because of public transportation, which can help the government develop new facilities for ordinary people.

On the other hand, it also has few disadvantages. Firstly, it can reduce the private job and transporting facilities because some people prefer private transportation, like A.C. buses and bikes. It can reduce the private facilities, which create several problems, such as people may not go work on that day because of their travelling situation. Secondly, it can create a significant issue in emergency situation, which can people face many challenging situation, as public transport may not available in every where or every time.

In my opinion, advantages are greater than the disadvantages because it help us to reduce the increasing number of vehicles and pollution.

In conclusion, it also has few disadvantages, which can be reduce from the government development with public transportation. I firmly believe that it can help us to save upcoming generation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 2.0

The response is completely off-topic. The prompt asks for an opinion on saving money for the future, but the essay discusses pollution and vehicle-free days. Because the response fails to address the task prompt entirely, it cannot be assessed for task achievement in relation to the set question. While the essay follows a standard structure for an IELTS task, the content is irrelevant to the specific topic provided. Consequently, the score reflects the failure to address the prompt's requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs with clear introductions and conclusions. The use of cohesive devices such as 'On the first hand', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion' is present, although some are used incorrectly (e.g., 'On the first hand' should be 'On the one hand'). The progression of ideas is clear within the context of the (irrelevant) topic. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints, which helps the reader follow the writer's argument, even though the argument itself does not address the prompt.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'decline traffic congestion' (should be 'reduce') and 'growth economy' (should be 'grow the economy'). The range is limited, and the writer relies on simple, repetitive structures. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of sophisticated vocabulary and the presence of collocation errors prevent a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Examples include 'pollution became a significant issue' (should be 'has become'), 'some people argued' (should be 'argue'), and 'it decrease the number' (should be 'decreases'). Subject-verb agreement and tense consistency are problematic. While the errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable and demonstrate a lack of control over more complex grammatical forms.
