IELTS Writing Task 2 question
It is important for everyone, including young people, to save money for their future.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Nowadays, many people believe that saving money is important for everyone, including young people. I agree with this statement because saving money helps people during difficult situations and also helps them achieve their future goals.
Firstly, saving money provides financial support during emergencies. Unexpected problems such as accidents, illness or losing a job can happen at any time. If people have enough savings, they can manage these situations without borrowing money from others. This can reduce stress and help them solve their problems more easily. For example, many people who had savings were able to support their families during the COVID-19 pandemic when they lost their jobs.
Secondly, saving money from a young age helps people achieve their future plans. Many people want to buy a house, continue higher education or start a business in the future. These goals require a large amount of money. If young people save a small amount regularly, they will have enough money to fulfil their dreams. For instance, students who save part of their pocket money or salary can use it to pay for university fees later.
In conclusion, I completely agree that everyone should save money because it provides financial security during emergencies and helps people achieve important goals in the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating an agreement with the importance of saving money. The ideas regarding financial security during emergencies and achieving future goals are relevant and logically supported. However, the response is significantly under the 250-word minimum requirement (209 words), which limits the depth of development. While the arguments are clear, they remain somewhat superficial due to the lack of word count. To reach a higher band, you must expand your points with more detailed explanations or additional examples to meet the length requirement and fully develop your arguments.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is well-organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a clear central topic, and the progression of ideas is logical. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion' effectively to guide the reader. However, the range of cohesive devices is somewhat limited, and the transitions between sentences could be more sophisticated to improve the flow. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is easy to follow, which is a strength of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. You use some topic-specific terms like 'financial support', 'unexpected problems', and 'financial security'. However, the range of vocabulary is somewhat narrow and repetitive. There is a lack of less common or more sophisticated lexical items that would demonstrate a higher level of proficiency. To improve, try to incorporate more precise synonyms and collocations rather than relying on basic descriptive language. The spelling is accurate throughout the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
Your grammar is generally accurate, and the sentences are easy to understand. You demonstrate a good grasp of simple and some complex sentence structures, such as conditional sentences ('If people have enough savings, they can manage...'). There are very few grammatical errors, and punctuation is used correctly. To achieve a higher band, you should aim to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as passive voice, relative clauses, or more varied subordinating conjunctions, to show greater flexibility and control over your writing.
