Student answer (Band 6.0)

Recently, there has been a growing concern over the importance of savings. I strongly agree, to the idea that it is necessary that people save money including youth for future purposes. This essay will discuss the reason why savings is important.

Firstly, one of my reason in support of this trend is that savings helps individual to tackle unforeseen occurrence. there are incident like health challenges that people are not aware that will happen in the future, money that is saved can help to address this incident. In addition, an opportunity may come up where one need to travel to the UK for studies, funds kept in the bank can be useful to obtain the opportunity. For example, many international students are self-funded using the money they save for years to sponsor their selves to school abroad.

secondly, savings makes people to be independent. When one is independent it simply means that the person do not rely on anybody to attend to his or her personal need, which as resulted in creating a sense of responsibility. For instance, most youth in my country Nigeria handle their needs by themselves without the help of their parents. Therefore, I will say savings has really helped people to be independent.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The essay addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. However, the response is under the 250-word minimum requirement, which negatively impacts the development of ideas. While the main points regarding unforeseen circumstances and independence are relevant, they are somewhat underdeveloped. The conclusion is incomplete, cutting off mid-sentence, which prevents a full summary of the argument. To improve, you should expand on your examples and ensure the essay meets the minimum length requirement to allow for a more comprehensive exploration of the topic and a complete conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, and there is a logical progression of ideas. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'In addition', and 'secondly' to link your points. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'which as resulted in creating a sense of responsibility', where the antecedent is vague. The abrupt ending of the essay significantly disrupts the overall coherence of the final paragraph. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring all paragraphs are fully developed will help improve this score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You rely on simple phrasing, such as 'many international students' and 'handle their needs'. There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'tackle unforeseen occurrence' (should be 'occurrences') and 'sponsor their selves' (should be 'themselves'). To reach a higher band, you should aim to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary and collocations, such as 'financial contingency' instead of 'unforeseen occurrence' or 'self-sufficient' instead of 'independent'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow, such as 'one of my reason' (should be 'reasons'), 'there are incident' (should be 'incidents'), and 'has make people' (should be 'has made people'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some sentences starting with lowercase letters. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors suggests a lack of control over complex structures. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tense usage will be essential for improvement.
