Student answer (Band 5.0)

It is true that in many countries, consumers go to supermarkets and buy food that is produced all over the world. In my opinion, it is a positive development because they can buy healthy food, which was not available previously, and countries can benefit economically.

Healthy food is now available in every supermarket. This is because local sellers now contact other retailers and may import healthy food into the market. For example, Mexican and Japanese foods such as mangoes, carrots, and sushi are now easily available nearby, which may be beneficial for those who lack vitamins. While critics argue that transporting food hurts the environment, the health benefits for consumers are far more important. As a result, trading international food is a highly beneficial trend for society.

Furthermore, countries can benefit from bringing global food. Sellers import food at a cheap price and again sell it at a higher price. For instance, they bring food like foreign beef and lamb meat and sell those at a profit. They receive money and consistently contribute to their country's revenue. Consequently, importing food represents a favorable outcome for a nation's financial stability.

In conclusion, although food is available all over the world and people can buy from various markets, I firmly believe in purchasing food from a supermarket more because people can get nutritious food. Thus, they can get good food, which keeps their bodies healthy, and also help in maintaining national revenue by giving a specific amount of money to the government.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 3.0

The response is completely off-topic. The prompt asks for an opinion on the importance of young people saving money for their future, but the essay discusses the globalization of food and international trade. Because the student failed to address the prompt entirely, the task achievement score is severely impacted. While the essay is structured as an argument, it does not engage with the specific topic provided, rendering the content irrelevant to the task instructions. To improve, it is essential to carefully analyze the prompt before writing to ensure the response directly answers the question asked.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs with clear topic sentences, such as 'Furthermore, countries can benefit from bringing global food.' Cohesive devices like 'For example,' 'While,' and 'Consequently' are used to link ideas within paragraphs. However, because the content is irrelevant to the prompt, the overall progression of ideas does not serve the purpose of the task. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of the text is generally smooth, but the lack of relevance to the topic prevents a higher score in this category.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, showing a range of words related to trade and nutrition, such as 'consumers,' 'economically,' 'import,' 'retailers,' and 'financial stability.' There are no significant spelling errors, and the word choice is generally accurate in the context of the essay's topic. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive and lacks the sophistication or precision required for higher bands. To reach a higher level, the student should aim to incorporate more collocations and less common lexical items that demonstrate a broader range of language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is a good command of basic grammar, and errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. Examples of complex structures include 'While critics argue that transporting food hurts the environment, the health benefits for consumers are far more important.' While the grammar is generally sound, the range of structures is somewhat limited, and there is a lack of more advanced grammatical features that would demonstrate greater flexibility. The punctuation is generally correct throughout the text.
