It is important for everyone, including young people, to save money for their future.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

I firmly subscribe to the view that it is essential to save money so it helps in the future. I strongly agree with this opinion because saving money can help people to deal with unexpected expenses and achieve their future goals.

The most persuasive argument in favor of this view is that saving money provides financial support. Life can be unpredictable, and people may suddenly need money for emergencies such as medical treatment, education, or important repairs. If young people develop the habit of saving from an early age, they will be better prepared for such situations. For example, a student who regularly saves a small amount of money can use it later for university fees or other educational expenses.

Secondly, saving money helps people achieve their long-term goals. Young people may want to buy a car, start a business, travel, or continue their education. These goals usually require a significant amount of money. By saving a little every month, they can gradually build enough money without depending too much on others.

Some people believe that young people should spend their money and enjoy their lives. Although enjoying life is important, spending all their money can create financial problems in the future. Therefore, young people should find a balance between spending and saving.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that everyone, including young people, should save money for the future. It provides financial security and helps people achieve their long-term goals. Developing this habit early can make their future more stable and comfortable.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses the prompt by taking a clear position and supporting it with relevant arguments. The ideas regarding financial security and long-term goal achievement are well-developed and logical. The inclusion of a counter-argument in the third paragraph demonstrates a balanced approach, which is a hallmark of a strong response. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main points. The response is well-focused and directly answers the question without any irrelevant information.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'The most persuasive argument', 'Secondly', 'Although', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. The paragraphing is appropriate, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, a counter-argument paragraph, and a conclusion. The flow of information is natural and easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses a range of topic-specific terms such as 'financial support', 'unexpected expenses', 'long-term goals', and 'financial security'. While the vocabulary is generally accurate and natural, it lacks a high degree of sophistication or 'less common' lexical items that would push the score into the 8.0 or 9.0 range. However, the word choice is precise enough to convey the intended meaning clearly without any errors that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a good control of grammatical structures. There is a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'If young people develop the habit of saving from an early age, they will be better prepared for such situations.' The majority of sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is used correctly. While the grammatical range is solid, it does not consistently display the 'wide range of structures' with 'full flexibility' required for the highest bands. Nevertheless, the writing is accurate and clear throughout.
