Student answer (Band 6.5)
Saving money has been an integral part of human civilisation for centuries. This practice has been an essential part of many cultures, especially the Japanese since the middle ages. However, with the fiat currency replacing gold and silver backed notes the practice has taken a completely different standing. In this essay I shall explain why I am against its traditional practice.
To start with, let us look back to why people used to save in the first place. In cultures like Indian and Japanese the basics of saving was to keep extra earned gold and silver for the betterment of the future generations. Remarkably, this worked! The fundamental reason for this was the intrinsic properties of gold and silver at being exceptionally good at holding their value over the long term. As a matter of fact, the Mughal Rupee lost only 50% of its value in the 300 year long history of the Mughal empire.
However, this cannot be said for the fiat currency of today. Astonishingly, the United States Dollar, which is thought to be the most robust currency in the world, has lost 300% of its value in the 50 years since it unpegged its currency from gold.
As a result, modern finance experts suggest saving in the modern way to counter modern problems. This means using a high yield savings account which offers interest payments enough to overrun the inflation rate and even to make you some money. Others suggest, investing it into the stock market, keeping the portfolio of stocks diversified. Interestingly, many even suggest investing into gold bars themselves, calling it the laziest investment in the world due to the lack of risk involved.
In essense, saving is a must when you do not have the funds for an essential element yet. What is important is how you save because the Japanese were not wrong when they embedded saving in their culture its only that the practice must evolve with the era.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed the prompt by taking a clear position against the 'traditional' practice of saving, arguing instead for modern investment strategies. However, the essay focuses heavily on the history of currency and inflation rather than the core of the prompt, which asks about the importance of saving for the future. While your arguments are relevant, they are somewhat tangential to the social and personal necessity of saving for young people. To improve, ensure your arguments directly link back to the prompt's focus on the individual's responsibility to save, rather than focusing primarily on macroeconomic theories regarding gold and fiat currency.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'To start with', 'However', and 'In essense' to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate historical context from modern financial advice. The progression of ideas is generally clear, though the transition between the historical analysis of the Mughal empire and the modern advice on stock markets could be smoother. The referencing is generally accurate, and the flow of the argument remains consistent throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, including terms like 'integral', 'fiat currency', 'robust', and 'diversified'. These choices show an ability to use topic-specific language effectively. There are a few minor errors, such as 'In essense' (spelling) and 'its only that' (grammar/punctuation), but these do not impede communication. You successfully use less common items to convey your ideas with precision. To reach a higher band, focus on ensuring that your word choices are consistently accurate and that you avoid minor spelling slips in more formal vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'The fundamental reason for this was the intrinsic properties of gold and silver at being exceptionally good at holding their value'. While your control is generally good, there are occasional errors, such as 'the basics of saving was' (subject-verb agreement) and 'its only that' (missing apostrophe in 'it's'). Punctuation is generally functional, though some sentences could be refined for better clarity. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the grammatical slips do not cause any difficulty for the reader.
