Student answer (Band 7.5)

It is often argued that everyone, especially young people, should save money for their future. I strongly agree with this view because saving money can provide financial security and help young people achieve important goals. This is particularly important in today's increasingly expensive world.

First of all, saving money is important because it prepares people for unexpected situations. Life can be unpredictable, and people may suddenly need money for medical treatment, education, or other emergencies. If young people develop the habit of saving from an early age, they will be better prepared for such problems. For example, a young person who saves a small amount every month may have enough money to deal with an unexpected expense without borrowing from others. This can also reduce stress during difficult periods.

Another important reason is that savings can help young people achieve their long-term goals. Many young people want to buy a house, start a business, travel, or continue their education. These goals usually require a large amount of money. By saving regularly, even a small amount, they can gradually build enough money to achieve these ambitions. Moreover, learning how to manage money at a young age can help people avoid unnecessary spending and develop responsible financial habits. These skills can benefit them throughout their adult lives.

In conclusion, I completely agree that everyone, including young people, should save money for the future. Saving provides protection against unexpected financial difficulties and makes it easier to achieve long-term goals. Although young people should also enjoy their lives and spend money on necessary things, developing a habit of regular saving is a wise decision that can make their future more secure.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have taken a clear position from the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the distinction between emergency preparedness and long-term goal achievement. Each paragraph provides relevant supporting examples, such as medical emergencies and purchasing a house, which effectively illustrate your points. The conclusion reinforces your stance while acknowledging a balanced view, which adds depth to your argument. The response is well-focused and directly answers the 'to what extent' question by providing a clear, reasoned justification for your agreement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth, using cohesive devices like 'First of all' and 'Another important reason'. Referencing is clear, and the use of linking words such as 'Moreover' and 'Although' helps to connect ideas effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The flow of information is natural, and the reader can easily follow your line of reasoning from start to finish.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for an academic essay. Phrases like 'financial security', 'unpredictable', 'long-term goals', and 'responsible financial habits' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it lacks some of the more sophisticated or 'less common' lexical items that would push the score into the 8.0 or 9.0 range. However, there are no significant errors in word choice or collocation, and the language used is precise enough to convey your meaning effectively throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You have used conditional sentences ('If young people develop...') and complex noun phrases effectively. The grammar is highly accurate, with very few errors. Punctuation is used correctly to support the clarity of your sentences. While the range of structures is sufficient for a high band, incorporating a slightly wider variety of advanced grammatical forms, such as passive voice or more complex inversion, could further enhance the sophistication of your writing. Overall, the control of grammar is strong and consistent.
