IELTS Writing Task 2 question
It is important for everyone, including young people, to save money for their future.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Saving money is important for everyone, including young people, because it provides financial security and prepares them for future responsibilities. I strongly agree with this statement, although I also believe that young people should enjoy some of their money.
Firstly, saving money from a young age helps people develop good financial habits. If young people regularly save part of their income or pocket money, they learn how to manage their finances responsibly. This can prevent unnecessary spending and reduce financial difficulties later in life. For example, a university student who has saved money may be able to pay for books, tuition fees or unexpected expenses without depending completely on their parents.
Secondly, savings can help young people achieve important future goals. Buying a car, purchasing a house, starting a business or continuing higher education can require a significant amount of money. Beginning to save early gives people more time to build sufficient funds. Furthermore, savings provide protection during emergencies such as unemployment or unexpected family expenses.
However, young people should not save every amount they receive. Youth is also a period for gaining valuable experiences. Spending a reasonable amount on travelling, hobbies, sports and social activities can contribute to personal development and happiness. Therefore, maintaining a balance between saving and spending is important.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that everyone should save money for the future, including young people. Starting early encourages financial discipline and provides greater security. Nevertheless, young people should also spend a reasonable proportion of their money on meaningful experiences while consistently saving for their future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have taken a clear position, agreeing with the importance of saving while providing a nuanced perspective by acknowledging the value of spending during youth. The ideas are well-developed, with logical arguments provided for both the benefits of saving (financial habits, future goals) and the counter-argument regarding personal development. Each paragraph is well-supported with relevant examples, such as university students managing tuition or the need for emergency funds. The conclusion effectively synthesizes your position, ensuring the response is balanced and comprehensive.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, and the transition between the benefits of saving and the necessity of spending is smooth, using appropriate linking phrases like 'Firstly,' 'Secondly,' 'Furthermore,' and 'However.' Cohesive devices are used effectively and naturally throughout the text. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, which helps the reader follow your argument without difficulty. The structure is coherent and contributes to a professional and academic tone throughout the piece.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases such as 'financial security,' 'financial discipline,' 'unexpected expenses,' and 'personal development' are used accurately and appropriately. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it lacks a high degree of sophistication or 'less common' lexical items that would elevate the score to the highest band. However, there are no significant errors in word choice or collocation, and the language used is natural and fits the context of the task well.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay displays a good command of grammatical structures. You use a mix of simple and complex sentences effectively, such as 'If young people regularly save part of their income... they learn how to manage their finances.' The punctuation is accurate, and there are very few, if any, grammatical errors. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the control over complex structures is consistent. While the range of structures is solid, incorporating a slightly wider variety of advanced grammatical forms (such as passive voice or more complex conditional structures) could further enhance the score.
