Student answer (Band 6.5)
The need to have monetary savings as a youth cannot be overemphasized, it is as essential as life itself. I strongly believe every responsible person, whether young or old, should have some cash saved up for unforeseen circumstances.
Young people need to save for the following reasons; First, young people need to learn to be responsible and not always depend on their guardians to provide them all they need. When a young person saves, it teaches them to be responsible and to not spend excessively. It helps them curb their spending desires as they begin to see for themselves how hard it is to set money aside and invest it into something meaningful. It shows them what it feels like to be able to have need and meet those needs by themselves. That feeling alone goes a long way to prepare them for a future where they will be financially responsible.
Again, saving is the only way a youth can build and invest in the future of their dream. Most teenagers who saved up money in their high-school days usually end up investing such money in the pursuit of their dreams in later years. Parents of middle class youths might not be able to fund their child's education as well as some extra classes in which the child may have interest in, but if such a child had previously worked and saved up, he or she will have what it takes to fund his or her side interests and passion.
Additionally, children who save are less likely to be criminals or steal from others. Knowing fully well how hard it is to save, they are kept from the tendency of taking what does not belong to them. This therefore implies that the more adolescents save, the less the crime in society. Finally it is worthy of note that money saved up helps salvage a person from unplanned emergencies that might come up in the future. A young individual who does not have an emergency fund will run helter-skelter when met by sudden needs or events.
In conclusion, saving is a life skill everyone should acquire, not matter the age. Even though different people save at varied rates due to the social strata, having that saving habit is still essential despite all odds.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The ideas are relevant and well-supported, particularly the points regarding personal responsibility and financial independence. The argument about crime prevention is a bit of a stretch but remains relevant to the topic of financial discipline. The essay is well-developed, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct reason for saving. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more specific, real-world examples rather than relying on generalisations about 'most teenagers' or 'middle class youths'.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a clear central topic, such as responsibility, future investment, and emergency preparedness. Cohesive devices are used effectively, such as 'First', 'Again', 'Additionally', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be improved by using more varied referencing. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. The student uses some good collocations like 'unforeseen circumstances', 'financial responsibility', and 'emergency fund'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'salvage a person' (which is slightly unnatural in this context) and 'run helter-skelter' (which is an idiom that may not fit the formal tone of an academic essay). The range is adequate to convey meaning precisely, though it lacks the more sophisticated, academic vocabulary that would characterise a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as the comma splice in the first sentence ('...overemphasized, it is as essential...') and minor punctuation issues. Some phrasing is slightly awkward, such as 'not matter the age' instead of 'no matter the age'. However, these errors do not impede communication. The control of grammar is generally good, and the meaning is always clear, but more variety in complex structures and greater precision in punctuation would be needed for a higher score.
