Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is often argued that everyone, including young people, should save money for their future. I largely agree with this statement because saving money can provide financial security and help people deal with unexpected situations.

One important reason why people should save money is that the future is uncertain. People may face unexpected problems, such as losing their job or having an emergency. If they have some savings, they will be in a better position to manage these difficulties without depending completely on other people. For example, a person who saves a small part of their monthly income can use this money during a period of unemployment.

Another reason is that saving money helps young people achieve their future goals. Many young people want to continue their education, start a business, or buy a house. These goals often require a significant amount of money. Therefore, developing the habit of saving at a young age can help them become more financially independent. For instance, students who save money regularly may be able to pay for some of their educational expenses in the future.

However, I believe that young people should not focus only on saving money. They should also enjoy their lives and spend money on useful experiences, such as travelling or learning new skills. The most important thing is to maintain a balance between saving for the future and spending money wisely in the present.

In conclusion, I agree that saving money is important for people of all ages, including young people. It can provide financial security and help people achieve important goals. Nevertheless, people should save responsibly while also enjoying their present lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response fully addresses the prompt by taking a clear position and supporting it with relevant arguments. You have balanced the necessity of saving with the importance of enjoying the present, which demonstrates a nuanced approach to the topic. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the distinction between financial security and achieving personal goals. The structure is logical, and the conclusion effectively reinforces your stance. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific, real-world examples or hypothetical scenarios to further illustrate your points, as the current examples are somewhat generic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is well-organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the benefits of saving and the need for balance is handled smoothly. You use cohesive devices such as 'One important reason', 'Another reason', and 'Nevertheless' effectively to guide the reader. The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall flow of the argument. The referencing is clear throughout, and the relationship between sentences is easy to follow, making the text coherent and easy to read.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the task. Phrases like 'financial security', 'financially independent', and 'unexpected situations' are used accurately. However, the vocabulary is generally functional rather than sophisticated. To improve, you should aim to incorporate more precise, less common lexical items or collocations to demonstrate a wider range. For instance, instead of 'useful experiences', you could use 'enriching pursuits'. The spelling is accurate throughout, and there are no word-choice errors that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use conditional sentences ('If they have some savings, they will be...') and relative clauses effectively. The grammar is generally accurate, with very few errors. Punctuation is used correctly to support the structure of your arguments. While the control is strong, the range of complex structures is somewhat limited. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate a wider variety of advanced grammatical forms, such as passive voice or inversion, to add more sophistication to your writing.
