Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 140 words. This significantly impacts the development of ideas. While the essay introduces the topic, it lacks a clear, sustained position and fails to provide a balanced discussion or a conclusion. The arguments regarding spending habits are under-developed and do not fully address the prompt's focus on the importance of saving for the future. Because the response is severely under-length and lacks the necessary depth for an academic essay, it cannot be awarded a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into short paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. While transition words like 'Firstly' are used, the connection between sentences is often disjointed. For example, the transition from discussing the benefits of spending to the negative consequences of debt is abrupt. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes inaccurate, such as the awkward phrasing 'Repetition of all these expenditures'. The overall structure is insufficient to support a coherent argument, and the lack of a concluding paragraph further hinders the flow of ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, often relying on simple phrasing like 'having dinners' or 'doing shopping'. There are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'life depend on money' (should be 'depends') and 'hand to mouth condition'. The range of vocabulary is limited, and the student struggles to use more sophisticated or academic terms to express complex ideas. The lack of variety and the presence of errors that occasionally impede the reader's understanding limit the score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('life depend', 'people who spends') and article misuse. Sentence structures are predominantly simple, and attempts at complex sentences are often faulty or punctuated incorrectly, such as the misuse of semicolons and commas in the second paragraph. The lack of control over basic grammar, combined with a very limited range of sentence structures, makes the writing difficult to follow at times. Significant improvement in sentence construction and proofreading for basic errors is required.
