It is important for everyone, including young people, to save money for their future.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is often argued that young people should save money for their future and I highly agree with this point, as saving money will help them to overcome financial problems and can achieve long-term goals.

Firstly, saving money can provide financial safety during unexpected situations. Life is unpredictable so people can face sudden issues like medical emergency, loss of job or sudden repairs. If young people develop the habit of saving money, they can easily get through this. For example, the money saved by a young employee can be used to fulfil their expense when they face loss of job.

Secondly, having savings allows young people to achieve major goals and become financially independent. Purchasing a house, starting a business, pursuing higher education or travelling abroad requires a considerable amount of money. So, instead of relying entirely on parents or taking loans, young people who save consistently can gradually build the funds needed for this goals. Moreover, learning to save teaches important financial skills such as budgeting and controlling unnecessary spending.

However, I believe that young people should not save every penny of their income but a fixed amount every month is enough. They should also have control in their expense. They should maintain a balance between saving and spending. For instance, after covering essential expenses and putting aside a fixed amount of money for the future, they can use some of their income for hobbies, entertainment or travelling.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that saving money is important for everyone, especially young people. Although enjoying the present is necessary, developing good saving habits provides financial stability, independence and greater opportunities in the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The ideas are relevant and well-supported with examples, such as the mention of medical emergencies or purchasing a house. The argument is extended logically, and the inclusion of a counter-perspective regarding the balance between saving and spending adds depth to the discussion. The response is well-structured, and the conclusion effectively summarises the main points. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more nuanced exploration of the 'why' behind the importance of saving, perhaps touching on broader economic implications or the psychological benefits of financial literacy.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the use of cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion' is effective and natural. The transition between the main arguments and the counter-argument is smooth. Referencing is generally clear, although some minor improvements in the variety of linking phrases could enhance the flow further. The paragraphing is appropriate, with each paragraph serving a distinct purpose in the overall structure of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and allows for clear communication. The student uses relevant topic-specific terms like 'financial independence', 'budgeting', and 'unnecessary spending'. While the range is adequate, it lacks the more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions that would characterize a higher band. There are no significant errors in word choice, and the tone remains appropriate for an academic essay. To improve, the student should aim to incorporate more precise collocations and a wider variety of academic vocabulary to demonstrate greater flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a good control of grammar, using a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the meaning is always clear. There are occasional minor slips, such as 'fulfil their expense' (should be 'expenses') and 'for this goals' (should be 'these goals'). Punctuation is generally accurate. The variety of structures is sufficient to convey complex ideas, though more frequent use of advanced grammatical forms, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, would help elevate the score further.
