Student answer (Band 7.0)

I think it is really important for young people to save money. There are several reasons for this. Firstly, saving money gives young people financial security and independence. If they have savings, they won't have to rely on their parents or take loans when unexpected expenses comes up, like medical bills or car repair.

Secondly, it helps them achieve long-term goals. For example, if they start saving early, they will find it much easier to pay for university tuition, buy a house, or even start a business later in life. The power of compound interest means small amounts saved now can grow a lot.

Thirdly, learning to save at a young age builds good financial habits. It teaches responsibility and self- discipline, which are important life skills. If young people spend everything they earn, they might struggle with debt in the future. In addition to personal benefits, saving money at young age has broader economic advantages.

Moreover, when young people save rather than spend impulsively, more money is available for investment in education, businesses and assets. This contributes to long-term economic growth and reduces the financial burden on families and government. Furthermore, young savers are better equipped to deal with economic downturns or job insecurity. Having an emergency fund means they are less likely to experience financial stress during recessions or periods of unemployment, which leads to greater stability in society as a whole.

In conclusion, it is clear that encouraging young people to save money is highly beneficial. It not only provides them with financial security and helps them achieve their future goals, but also promotes responsible financial behavior and economic stability. Therefore, schools, parents and governments should all play a role in teaching young people the value of saving from an early age.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position in favor of saving money and supporting it with relevant, well-developed arguments. Each paragraph introduces a distinct point—financial independence, long-term goals, and habit formation—which are then extended with logical explanations and examples. The inclusion of broader economic benefits adds depth to the argument, demonstrating a thorough understanding of the topic. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main points while providing a clear recommendation. The ideas are well-supported and relevant to the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth, using cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Thirdly', and 'Moreover'. The use of referencing is generally effective, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the structure of an argumentative essay. While some transitions are standard, they are used accurately to guide the reader through the argument. The overall flow is natural, and the relationship between ideas is clearly established throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses a range of topic-specific terms such as 'financial security', 'compound interest', 'economic downturns', and 'job insecurity'. There is an attempt to use more sophisticated language, which is generally successful. While the vocabulary is not overly complex, it is precise and conveys the intended meaning clearly. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation that impede communication, and the language used is natural and fits the formal tone required for an academic essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a good command of grammatical structures. There is a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as the use of conditional clauses ('If they have savings, they won't have to rely...') and relative clauses. While there are minor errors, such as 'unexpected expenses comes up' (should be 'come up') and 'at young age' (should be 'at a young age'), these are infrequent and do not interfere with the clarity of the message. The punctuation is generally accurate, and the sentence construction is varied enough to maintain the reader's interest.
