Student answer (Band 7.5)
It is often argued that saving money is a responsibility that extends beyond adulthood to include young people as well. I fully agree with this statement, as early financial habits shape long-term security and instil valuable life skills.
Firstly, saving from a young age allows individuals to build a financial cushion well before major life expenses arise, such as university tuition, a first car, or a rental deposit. Young people who set aside even small amounts regularly are far better positioned to handle unexpected costs, like medical emergencies or job loss, without falling into debt. For instance, a student who saves part-time earnings throughout their studies enters adulthood with both capital and financial confidence, rather than starting from zero.
Secondly, the habit of saving is best formed early, since financial discipline learned in youth tends to persist into adulthood. Someone who never learns to budget or delay gratification as a teenager is more likely to struggle with money management later in life, regardless of income level. Schools and parents who encourage children to save a portion of allowances or gifts are effectively teaching a skill more valuable than the money itself.
Some may argue that young people should be free to enjoy their earnings without the pressure of saving, since they have fewer responsibilities. While occasional spending on experiences is reasonable, this should not come at the expense of building any savings habit at all, as the two are not mutually exclusive.
In conclusion, I strongly believe saving money is important for people of all ages, including the young, because it builds resilience and instils lifelong financial discipline.
